Tooth Coloured Restorations
Composite fillings:
These fillings are made of a composite resin and can be virtually undetected when placed in the tooth. They are generally for small to medium sized cavities. The advantage of composite fillings is that less drilling is required on the tooth and they actually stick and bond to the teeth so they can bring back the strength of the original tooth. They can be used for both front and back teeth and look completely natural.
Inlays/Onlays:
These are laboratory bespoke handcrafted restorations. When a filling or cavity becomes very large, the cusps (the pointed parts of your back tooth) can be weak in structure. If the cusps are not protected they can break and result in an even larger cavity or tooth loss. The onlay helps to protect the weaker cusps and allows you to chew with confidence. They can be made of composite resin or ceramic. Back to General Dentistry.
Fresh Breath Clinic
Bad breath (halitosis) can be due to several factors. Certain foods (eg strong cheeses and coffee), a dry mouth, poor oral hygiene and smoking can all cause bad breath. Identifying the cause and then providing good oral hygiene techniques and interdental cleaning can really help. The use of non-alcohol based mouthwashes, mints, sugar free gum and tongue brushing can banish bad breath. Back to General Dentistry.
Crowns and Bridges
Crowns:
When a tooth becomes so weak that the cusps (pointed parts on your back teeth) may fracture, a crown is be recommended. This acts as a “bomb shelter” for the tooth and helps to give strength to prevent the tooth from breaking by encapsulating and protecting the entire tooth. There are two main types of tooth-coloured crowns; the metal-ceramic crown and the all-ceramic crown. The difference is in the sub-structure. One has a metal sub-structure and the other a pressed ceramic or zerconia sub-structure. If you are looking for aesthetics, strength and longevity the all-ceramic crown is for you. Although the metal-ceramic crowns are strong, they can often leave a dark line around the gum margin and this can look aesthetically displeasing. Back to General Dentistry.
Bridges: If you have one or more missing teeth, a bridge is an option that can restore your mouth to full function and aesthetics. A bridge is a fixed, bespoke laboratory made restoration that uses support from tooth/teeth that are adjacent to the gap that holds a prosthesis in place. They can be tooth-coloured or metal. The tooth-coloured types can have a sub-structure of metal, resin or ceramic. Your dentist can go through your options to help you choose what is right for you. Back to General Dentistry.
Emergency Dental Care
In a dental emergency, i.e. a tooth causing pain or swelling or a traumatised tooth, we can help to get you out of pain and advise you appropriately. By making you pain-free you can then choose your definitive level of care. Back to General Dentistry.
Root Canal Therapy
When a tooth becomes infected with bacteria the nerve can die. This can happen due to tooth decay, gum disease or trauma. In order to avoid removing the tooth, the infected nerve is gently cleaned out and medication is placed into the tooth to make it sterile. The void where the nerve used to be is then filled to prevent re-infection. Root canal therapy has a very high success rate and is a great way of keeping your own teeth in place. As the tooth can become brittle after root canal therapy, we sometimes recommend a crown to prevent the tooth from breaking when you are chewing. Back to General Dentistry.
Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection around the teeth, gums and the bone surrounding the teeth. Most people who have it are not aware of it, especially in the early stages. The main cause is plaque bacteria that builds up every day on your teeth. When the plaque becomes hard it sticks to the teeth and is called calculus (tartar). Once it becomes calculus you need professional help to clean it off. If left in place the calculus can progress to below the gum-line.
The warning signs are:
Persistent bad breath
Bleeding gums
Swollen, tender gums
Gum shrinkage
Loose teeth
Increased spaces between teeth
You can even have periodontal disease and not have any of these warning signs! That’s why we regularly carry out a periodontal screening to identify any problem areas early.
If periodontal therapy is required we will advise on an oral hygiene regime to be carried out at home, as well as recommend sessions to remove calculus build up below the gum line. We may anaesthetise the area to make this more comfortable for you. Back to General Dentistry.
Specialist Oral Surgeon
We have an in-house specialist oral surgeon who will be able to perform oral surgery including apicectomies (specialised root canal surgery) and removal of complex positioned wisdom teeth. Back to General Dentistry.
Hygiene Therapy
We believe in prevention of dental disease, which is why our Hygiene Department will provide you with the care and information you need to maintain a healthy mouth. In our Standard Sessions (45 min) your hygienist will identify problematic areas by using special plaque-disclosing solution. You will be given advice on how to tackle these areas to help you get your mouth to an optimum oral health level. They will also screen for oral cancer and monitor for any gum shrinkage and periodontal pocketing (loss of bony support around the tooth). The hygienist will provide you with a continuing care programme that is tailored to your needs and give you the confidence that comes from having a healthy smile.

Implants
If you have one or more teeth missing, implants are a fantastic way of restoring aesthetics and function. An implant is a titanium screw that is carefully inserted into the jaw bone. Once the implant is integrated, a prosthesis is placed on top. Implants can be used to support single crowns, a bridge and can even help to hold dentures in place. Back to General Dentistry.
