Top tips to enjoy a healthier Easter from dentist near Godaliming, Surrey

Easter is here and out come the Easter bunnies, chocolate eggs and Easter egg hunts!  Most people are aware that chocolate is not good for the teeth or the waistline but there are ways to really enjoy Easter in a healthier way.  Try these top tips:

1. Buy an egg without any additional branded chocolate bars and smaller sweets inside the egg. Just go for one with a shell.

2. Consider a chocolate egg with a high amount of cocoa content- milk or white chocolate eggs contain much more sugar.

3. Buy a smaller egg.

4. Check the sugar content in the Easter eggs and choose one with a lower amount of sugar.

5. Eat some of the Easter egg instead of a dessert after a main meal instead of snacking in between meals.

6. Brush your teeth 30 mins after eating the egg, prevents the chocolate from lingering in the mouth.

Have a Happy Easter from all at Time Dental!

New snack maybe harmful to children’s teeth

February 6th, 2013

Fruit puree snacks bought in packets may be a favorite for some children, but they may have a detrimental affect on the child’s dental health.

Some dental experts are advising parents to avoid giving  fruit puree snacks bought in packets to their children. The amount of sugar in the treats counteracts any possible positive effects the snacks may have.

Many come with plenty of sugar.  For example, one brand had 11 grams of sugar in the snack. This actually gives no nutritional value to consuming that much sugar when considering the size of the portion.

A big problem is if the snack is allowed to linger on the teeth which can happen if snacked constantly throughout the day.

It is important to give the snack in moderation or while drinking large quantities of water which will lessen the impact immensely.

Fizzy drinks linked with depression

January 10th, 2013

fizzy drink

A research study carried out in the US has found that people who drank more than four cans of fizzy drink a day were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to those who did not drink fizzy drinks.

The researchers studied the drink consumption of 263,925 men and women aged 50 -71.  After 10 years from the initial evaluation, participants were asked whether they had been diagnosed with depression since 2000.

For more information see: http://www.dentistry.co.uk/news/diet-fizzy-drinks-linked-depression

Fizzy drinks can cause rapid tooth decay if drunk on a daily basis due to the high amount of sugar in them.  Not only that but the fizz, which is carbonic acid,  can cause erosion of the tooth surface which can cause a huge amount of tooth damage. The fizzy drinks can erode through the hard enamel surface of the tooth leaving you at risk of further tooth decay and sensitivity.  One top tip if you drink fizzy drinks is to drink it through a straw.  This means that the drink will by-pass the teeth and reduce tooth damage.

Dentist near Fleet provides emergency pain free dentistry

August 1st, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental near Fleet for an emergency appointment with a broken tooth.  She had not been to a dentist in 6 years and was very apprehensive as she had a previous bad experience at the dentist which put her off attending regularly for 6 monthly healthy mouth reviews.  He had eaten a seeded bread which result in part of her tooth breaking.  The tooth was now sensitive to cold drinks.

On assessing the tooth the back section of her tooth had indeed broken off.  However the reason why it broke was due to the fact that the tooth had become very decayed.  When decay starts on a tooth and becomes extensive the tooth becomes much weaker.  In her case not only had the tooth now broken but the decay had now reached the nerve of the tooth which is why it was now sensitive to temperature.  If this decay had been caught in its early stages the tooth could have been filled with direct white composite.  Composite fillings when placed by a skilled cosmetic dentist can look like a completely natural tooth.

As the decay had now become so extensive the options for this tooth were either root canal therapy or extraction.  Root canal therapy is a way of keeping your own teeth.  It involves disinfecting the inside of the tooth and filling where the nerve used to be.  The tooth is then often crowned to prevent the tooth from breaking any further.  Crowns can be tooth coloured or metal.  The tooth coloured crowns are made of ceramic which are very strong when bonded to the tooth.  Crowns are an effective way of restoring a weak tooth so that you can bite comfortably and with confidence.

Healthy mouths by replacing mercury fillings at dentist near Farnborough

July 12th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental for a healthy mouth review.  She had not been to see a dentist for sometime and wanted to ensure her mouth was healthy.  She was aware that she had a number of old mercury fillings and did not like the look of them.

On assessing  her mouth her mercury fillings were in fact failing.  The larger mercury fillings had cracks down the tooth and decay had taken hold.  Mercury fillings weaken your teeth overtime, on placement more of the tooth needs to be removed to lock the fillings in which essentially weakens the tooth.  They also exapnd and contract and combined with the forces from chewing, minor cracks in the tooth occur.  Once this happens bacteria can seep into the cracks and start the decay process.  Often the filling can break or the tooth will break.

Catching this early is a great preventative way of keeping the tooth healthy.  Small to medium sized amalgam mercury fillings can be replaced with direct white composite fillings.  Once placed by a skilled cosmetic dentist not only will the tooth be restored to health, but it will look like a natural tooth again.  White composite fillings can last many years, they also bring the strength of the tooth back as they bond and stick to it.

How to achieve a healthy mouth with cosmetic dentistry at dentist near Godalming

July 5th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking for a new cosmetic dentist.  He had not been for a dental health check for a long time and was aware that he had lots of old mercury fillings that would need replacing and wanted tooth coloured fillings in place. He was looking for a dentist to help him keep his teeth and mouth healthy and so he did some research for dentists local to him and liked the reviews that patients had written about us.

On assessing his mouth he did indeed have a number of large mercury amalgam fillings that were failing.  There were gaps between the tooth and the filling and some teeth had cracks running down them.  Mercury amalgam fillings are being commonly replaced with tooth coloured alternatives.  Mercury fillings acutally expand and contract over time.  When teeth are heavily filled it often leaves the tooth quite weak. When this happens the tooth often breaks due to the weaker cusps.

Direct white composite fillings are excellent for small to medium sized filings.  They bond to the tooth which helps to bring the strength of the tooth back.  They also look completely natural like the original tooth when placed by a skilled cosmetic dentist.  When cavities get to a very large size, onlays are often recommended.  You may be familiar with crowns, they encapsulate the whole tooth; onlays cover the biting surface of the tooth which helps to prevent fracture of the cusps; the margins are higher on the tooth which help you to keep it plaque free; and they are also bonded to the tooth to give it strength.  Onlays can be made of gold, resin or ceramic.

Replacing mercury amalgam fillings at a Cosmetic dentist near Alton

June 27th, 2012

A patient came to see us at Time Dental looking for a Cosmetic dentist.  She had a number of old mercury amalgam fillings which she wanted replacing as white composite as they looked like she had holes in her teeth.  She had not been to see a dentist in 18 months and was aware that she was overdue a dental health check.

On assessing her mouth she had early stages of gum disease also known as gingivits.  Her gums were inflammed, red and she reported seeing blood after brushing her teeth.  She also had a number of very old mercury fillings that had been in place since childhood days.  Cracks on the larger mercury amalgam filled teeth were also evident and there were also gaps between the fillings and the teeth which indicated that they were failing.

Mercury amalgam fillings expand and contract over time. Combined with the pressure from chewing, this places an enormous amount of stress on the tooth.  In time micro enamel cracks occur and the tooth or filling will then break. If the fracture is vertical and runs straight thorough the tooth it renders it unrestorable and will have to be removed.

Small to meduim sized mercury fillings are routinely replaced with white composite fillings.  Tooth coloured fillings such as composite actually stick and bond to the tooth which helps give it strength.  Less preparation is required to restore the tooth and expertly placed white composite fillings by a cosmetic dentist can make the tooth look natural.

When mercury fillings get to a large size they actually weaken the tooth which places it risk of breaking.  To protect the weaker part of the tooth often an Onlay is advised.  An onlay covers and protects the biting surface of the tooth.  You maybe familiar with crowns which encapsulate the whole tooth.  An onlay has edges which are higher up which makes it easier for you to keep clean; they are also bonded in place that give it strength.

Cosmetic dentist near Guildford, Surrey

March 26th, 2012

A patient came to see us who was bothered about his overlapping lower front teeth.  He previously had braces as a teenager, however in the last few years he noticed that his teeth were moving and going back to the way they used to be.  He had not been to see a dentist for a thorough dental health check in a number of years and although he was not experiencing any pain decided to register and see what could be done about his crowded lower teeth.

Unfortunately the crowded lower teeth were the least of his problems.  As he had not been to see a dentist in years he was not given proper dietry advice and his teeth had mutiple areas of decay.

Tooth decay or caries is the demineralisation of the enamel caused by products of plaque bacteria in the mouth.  The bacteria love a sugary environment  which they produce into acids that destory tooth enamel.  Once the bacteria has broken thorough the enamel surface and into the dentine layer the decal can spread very quickly to the nerve and give symptoms of toothache.

The best thing to do is ensure that you have a healthy diet and that you do not snack on high sugar food and drinks.  Make sure you drink plenty of water as this can remove large particles of food debris.  Brush your teeth twice a day and also clean in between your teeth.  Use a flouride toothpaste. Regularly visit your dentist and hygienist for health checks.  This will ensure that things are caught early and the preventative advice can be given.

In the case of this patient, he wanted to achieve a healthy mouth as his priority.  We therefore had to place a number of white composite fillings after having removed the decay to help him achieve dental health.  The composite fillings are tooth coloured so they blend with the natural tooth surface.  As they also stick to the tooth, they also help to bring back the strength of it back.

Replacing mercury fillings at Alton dentist

February 6th, 2012

It may surprise you to hear that mercury fillings are still being placed in dental practices.  Mercury is a toxic metal if exposed to significant levels it can cause you harm.  Studies have shown that mercury fillings do leak mercury into your sysytem, however the levels are not high enough to cause any harm.

At Tme Dental we like to give our pateints the options available and give you our recommendations.  At the end of the day it’s your mouth and we want to give you the best advice and help you make the choices that are right for you.

When cavities are small to medium sized the current white composite fillings are a fantastic way to restore your mouth to health.  White composite fillings do not contain mercury, they bond to the teeth which helps to bring the strength of the tooth back, and they alos look like your natural tooth.

Mercury fillings over time actually weaken your teeth.  As they are metal they expand and contract and can cause micro enamel cracks to occur within the tooth.  There will be a point where either the tooth may break, the filling may break, or decay will start aorund the filling due to the enamel crack.

Catching these issues early is the best way to deal with potential problems.  Replacing mercury amalgam fillings is very common now and in the right hands is completely safe to do.

Sensitive teeth at Guildford dentists

February 2nd, 2012

Cold weather can really bring out the sensitivity in your teeth.  If your gums have receeded even very slightly you can end up suffering from sensitivity.

Receeding gums can be caused be a number of reasons.  Common reasons can be due to existing periodontal or gum disease where the harmful bacteria in the mouth cause toxins that can damage the gum and supporting tissues.  Another reason for gum recession is aggressive tooth brushing.  The excess pressure on the gums from your tooth brush can actually wear away the gums.  Another reason could be due to a bad bite.  Heavy pressure on specific teeth casue the tooth to flex and can result in the tooth shattering at the gum line which can result in the gums receeding.

Any of these causes of gum recession can result in sensititvity to cold.  The dentinal tubules which run from the outside of the tooth to the nerve in the centre are open to the elements and changes in temperature or certain types of acidic foods can result in the classic sensitivity.

In the very early stages of gum recession a good tip to reduce the sensitivity is to rub a very small amount of Colgate pro-relief toothpaste onto the affected sensitive part of the tooth 3- 4 times a day.  This helps to block the dentinal tubules and therefore reduce the sensitivity.  Next see your dentist to help identfiy the cause of the sensitvity as you may have a more serious reason for the sensitivity such as a cracked tooth or active dental decay.
