National Smile month has started!

May 21st, 2013

Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey near the Hampshire borders supports the British dental health foundation campaign National Smile MonthWhat is National Smile Month about? It’s the U.K’s largest oral health campaign. It started on the 20th May and finishes on the 20th June. At the heart of it there are three important key messages to improve oral health.

1. Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.

2. Cut down on how often you snack on sugary food and drinks.

3. Visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Sounds easy, and yet statistics show only 50% of the population visit the dentist regularly!  National Smile Month was created by the British Dental Health Foundation in 1976.  The campaign has helped change the oral health landscape in the UK.

However research has shown oral health problems still persist, with many people overlooking the value of good oral health.  More than a third of adults are likely to delay dental treatment due to cost. More than half of the UK workforce isn’t allowed to take paid leave off work to visit their dentist. 60 per cent of people aged 65 and over regret not looking after their teeth earlier in life.

Time Dental are here to help change that by providing affordable comprehensive care at opening times on weekends and late on weekdays.

Fizzy drinks linked with depression

January 10th, 2013

fizzy drink

A research study carried out in the US has found that people who drank more than four cans of fizzy drink a day were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to those who did not drink fizzy drinks.

The researchers studied the drink consumption of 263,925 men and women aged 50 -71.  After 10 years from the initial evaluation, participants were asked whether they had been diagnosed with depression since 2000.

For more information see: http://www.dentistry.co.uk/news/diet-fizzy-drinks-linked-depression

Fizzy drinks can cause rapid tooth decay if drunk on a daily basis due to the high amount of sugar in them.  Not only that but the fizz, which is carbonic acid,  can cause erosion of the tooth surface which can cause a huge amount of tooth damage. The fizzy drinks can erode through the hard enamel surface of the tooth leaving you at risk of further tooth decay and sensitivity.  One top tip if you drink fizzy drinks is to drink it through a straw.  This means that the drink will by-pass the teeth and reduce tooth damage.

Dad’s can influence the impact of fear of the dentist to their kids

November 22nd, 2012

A study from the University of Madrid  supports previous findings that fear levels among fathers, mothers and children are interlinked.

The new study highlights the important role that parents, especially fathers, play in the transmission of dental fear in the family.  Researchers analysed 183 children aged 7 to 12.  The study suggests that transmission of fear from mother to child can be  influenced be the reaction that the father displays when going to the dentist.

The implications of these results suggest a need for educating the parents especially the dads in prevention of dental fear and also that dads need to “man up” when going to see the dentist and not show signs of anxiety. Better still find an empathetic dentist who understands their dental anxiety and can help to reduce it which in turn would help the children by seeing a more relaxed dad at the dentists.

Prevent gum disease and bad breath at dentist near Alton

September 20th, 2012

Bad breath can be a severe problem for many people.  It can affect your confidence in social circumstances; meeting people for business and even ruin your chances for finding the right partner.  If you’re unsure you have bad breath, try this little test.  Take some floss and pass it between your back molar teeth; and now smell it.  If it smells bad the chances are your breath will also pick up that smell.

Bad breath or halitosis can be caused by a number of things but did you know that it could also be a sign of gum disease?  Plaque bacteria that is allowed to build up in the mouth becomes hard which is called tartar or calculus. The bacteria release a number of chemicals that destroy the boney support of your teeth.  The gums can become inf lammed and bleed, the teeth can become loose and a bad taste or smell can often be detected.  Gum disease can also occur and not show any signs or symptoms!  That’s why its so important to regularly have your gums screened for gum (periodontal) disease when you visit the dentist and hygienist.

At Time Dental near Alton the hygienist can give you the skills and techniques for ensuring healthy teeth and gums and banish the bad breath.

cosmetic dentures at Surrey dentist in Farnham

September 19th, 2012

Dentures are not what they used to be.  Now you can have cosmetic dentures that mimic the look of natural teeth so that you can have a confident smile.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey looking for help to smile confidently.  He had neglected his dental health and only attended when he was in pain.  This had led to a patch up style dentistry and was not beneficial for his overall dental health.  He had a very bad experience as a child and now he was in his mid seventies and was still apprehensive about dental care.  He had finally decided to explore comprehensive dental care and was looking for a dentist that would provide cosmetic dentistry as well as helping him keep his  mouth healthy.

On assessing his mouth the majority of his remaining teeth had severe gum disease and decay.  This had resulted in hiss teeth becoming very loose and gums sore and bleeding.  When gum disease and dental decay has taken hold to this extent there would be no option but to remove the teeth.  Fortunately this did not mean that he would be left with a gummy smile.  Immediate cosmetic dentures can provisionally provide a confident smile and allow him to chew without being in discomfort.  Once healing of the gums had taken place, the options could be to provide a fixed bridge with dental implants, a cosmetic denture retained by dental implants or a new set of stable dentures.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Surrey as well as surrounding areas of Hampshire, West sussex, and Berkshire.

Calm your anxiety at dentist near Fleet

August 16th, 2012

A patient came to see us at Time Dental who was very anxious even for his first comprehensive dental health check.  He described himself as a having a dental phobia and had a bad experience in the past and since then he had been very nervous.

This is a very common reason for dental phobia and anxiety and its easy to see why people become nervous about coming to see the dentist.  In order to help the patient Dr Rashid first discussed with him what the bad experience was.  In this case the patient had felt all the treatment that was being carried out and found the experience very painful.

Dr Rashid listened to the patients concerns and came to an understanding of how and why the patient was feeling nervous.  He then explained that there are different levels of local anaesthetic that can be given and sometimes extra anaesthetic maybe required to ensure complete numbness.  He then talked the patient through very specific breathing exercises that are proven to help reduce anxiety and stress.  These breathing techniques can be applied to many different situations where people can feel stressed and tense.

Dental treatment can be worrying for nervous anxious patients, but with the right advise and care you can still get the best care with reduced stress.
