Straight teeth with Adult braces at dentist near Godalming, Surrey

October 17th, 2012

Adult braces are becoming more popular these days.  There’s no need to have metal train track braces.  Now you can have straight teeth with Adult orthodontics to hep give you confidence.

A patient came to Time Dental near Godalming looking for options to straighten his upper teeth.  He had orthodontic braces as a child and his teeth had now become crowded again.  This is a very common occurrence due to retainers after the orthodontic treatment not being worn.

On assessing his mouth his main concern was the upper front teeth overlapping.  His options were fixed orthodontic braces that can be tooth coloured running on the outside of the teeth or they can also be fixed onto the inner side of the teeth.  Another option would be clear aligner adult orthodontic braces such as Invisalign.  These are virtually invisible and the clear aligners are changed every 2 weeks to help move the teeth into a straight position.  Another option is the Inman aligner.  This is a removable orthodontic adult brace that uses very gentle pressure to squeeze the teeth into a straighter alignment.  The treatment time can take between 8-18 weeks depending on the initial degree of crowding.

Time Dental provides this service for patients in Godalming as well as other areas in Surrey.

Orthodontic braces for adults at dentist in Farnham, Surrey

September 27th, 2012

Adults are opting for straight teeth for a confident smile.  Metal train track braces may still be for teenagers but there are a number of different invisible braces options for adults.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey looking for options to straighten her teeth.  She was in her late thirties and had one upper tooth out of alignment since a child.  She had heard about adult braces and wanted to know what could be done to help her.  She was now very self conscious of her smile.

One option to straighten her teeth would be to use tooth coloured fixed braces.  Due to them being the same colour as your teeth they are quite discreet. If having fixed brackets is still not what you want Invisalign clear aligners may be your answer.  They are removable adult braces and are virtually invisible and can help you straighten your crooked smile to give you more confidence.  As they are removable you can still eat the foods you enjoy and keep your gums healthy as you can easily clean in between your teeth.  A further option could be the Inman aligner which can straighten your teeth in a matter of weeks.  This is also a removable orthodontic brace that moves your front upper or lower teeth by using gentle pressure form special springs.

Time Dental provides this orthodontic adult braces service in Farnham as well as other areas in Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex and Berkshire.

cosmetic dentures at Surrey dentist in Farnham

September 19th, 2012

Dentures are not what they used to be.  Now you can have cosmetic dentures that mimic the look of natural teeth so that you can have a confident smile.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey looking for help to smile confidently.  He had neglected his dental health and only attended when he was in pain.  This had led to a patch up style dentistry and was not beneficial for his overall dental health.  He had a very bad experience as a child and now he was in his mid seventies and was still apprehensive about dental care.  He had finally decided to explore comprehensive dental care and was looking for a dentist that would provide cosmetic dentistry as well as helping him keep his  mouth healthy.

On assessing his mouth the majority of his remaining teeth had severe gum disease and decay.  This had resulted in hiss teeth becoming very loose and gums sore and bleeding.  When gum disease and dental decay has taken hold to this extent there would be no option but to remove the teeth.  Fortunately this did not mean that he would be left with a gummy smile.  Immediate cosmetic dentures can provisionally provide a confident smile and allow him to chew without being in discomfort.  Once healing of the gums had taken place, the options could be to provide a fixed bridge with dental implants, a cosmetic denture retained by dental implants or a new set of stable dentures.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Surrey as well as surrounding areas of Hampshire, West sussex, and Berkshire.

Healthy mouth replacing failing mercury fillings at dentist near Winchester

September 4th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental based in Farnham, Surrey looking to ensure that his mouth stayed healthy.  He had a number of mercury amalgam fillings placed as a child and was keen on replacing them as they now looked like black holes in his mouth.  He wanted to maintain a healthy mouth and to be able to smile confidently.

On assessing his mouth his gums were bleeding due to a build up of plaque bacteria, and he had a number of failing mercury fillings.  Mercury amalgam fillings actually expand and contract over time.  When they get to a certain size their may not be a sufficient amount of tooth to support the cusps.  This may result in the tooth breaking.

Fortunately there is a solution- the onlay.  Normally as a replacement for large mercury amalgam fillings, the onlay covers and protects the biting surface of teeth.  Onlays are made of tooth coloured ceramic but can be made of resin or gold.  The other advantages of onlays are that the margins are high on the tooth that allows you to keep them plaque free and they are bonded in place that adds strength to the tooth.

The patient had a number of other small to medium sized mercury fillings that were failing.  These could mercury fillings could be removed and made disease free and replaced with white composite resin fillings.  Again due to the fact that they bond to the teeth it helps give strength.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in the Winchester area as well as Surrey, Hampshire, West sussex and Berkshire.

Straight teeth for adult patients near Camberley with invisible braces

August 23rd, 2012

Orthodontic braces are no longer just for teenagers especially if braces can be virtually invisible.  At Time Dental we are seeing more and more adults looking for ways to straighten their crowded teeth fast and discreetly.

A patient came to see us concerned about her upper front teeth.  She no longer shows her teeth when smiling as she is now very embarrassed about them.  They had always bothered her but she knew she did not want to have fixed train track braces and didn’t know what her other options were.

Time Dental provide two very different types of adult orthodontic braces.  One type is a clear aligner system and the other is a removable spring loaded appliance.

The clear aligner system, called Invisalign, uses a series of clear aligners that are changed every 2 weeks.  As each aligner is changed they gradually move your teeth into the correct position.  The adult brace clear aligners are virtually invisible and can take 8-24 months of treatment depending on how much movement is required for the teeth.

The other sysytem is the Inman aligner adult brace.  This adult brace is reasonably discreet and uses a spring loaded system that very gently squeezes the teeth into a straighter position.  Treatment time is typically 8-16 weeks.  Super fast!

Time Dental provides this service for patients in Camberley as well as other areas in Hampshire, West sussex, Berkshire and Surrey.

How to achieve a healthy mouth with cosmetic dentistry at dentist near Godalming

July 5th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking for a new cosmetic dentist.  He had not been for a dental health check for a long time and was aware that he had lots of old mercury fillings that would need replacing and wanted tooth coloured fillings in place. He was looking for a dentist to help him keep his teeth and mouth healthy and so he did some research for dentists local to him and liked the reviews that patients had written about us.

On assessing his mouth he did indeed have a number of large mercury amalgam fillings that were failing.  There were gaps between the tooth and the filling and some teeth had cracks running down them.  Mercury amalgam fillings are being commonly replaced with tooth coloured alternatives.  Mercury fillings acutally expand and contract over time.  When teeth are heavily filled it often leaves the tooth quite weak. When this happens the tooth often breaks due to the weaker cusps.

Direct white composite fillings are excellent for small to medium sized filings.  They bond to the tooth which helps to bring the strength of the tooth back.  They also look completely natural like the original tooth when placed by a skilled cosmetic dentist.  When cavities get to a very large size, onlays are often recommended.  You may be familiar with crowns, they encapsulate the whole tooth; onlays cover the biting surface of the tooth which helps to prevent fracture of the cusps; the margins are higher on the tooth which help you to keep it plaque free; and they are also bonded to the tooth to give it strength.  Onlays can be made of gold, resin or ceramic.

Time Dental prodives this service to patients in Godalming as well as the surrounding areas in Surrey, Hampshire, Werst sussesx and Berkshire.

Why replace missing teeth with dental implants at dentist near Guildford?

June 28th, 2012

A patient near Guildford came to Time Dental with a swelling at the gum line on one of her teeth.  She had no pain from it but she noticed the swelling was now getting bigger.

On assessing the tooth in question, it had already been root canal treated and had a crown on top.  The swelling origin was from midway up the root of the tooth.  On further investigation the root had a horizontal break thorough it which rendered the tooth unrestorable.  The only option for the tooth was extraction.

This particular tooth was a molar chewing tooth and so the chewing function for the patient would have been decreased after extraction. The other problem that may occur when losing a tooth is teeth drifting and tilting into the space.  This can result in a change of the bite and also cause gum problems as food would now get stuck between the open spaces of the teeth that have tilted.  The patient was keen on replacing the missing tooth and we discussed her options for filling the gap.

One fixed option would be to have a bridge.  This uses the teeth on either side for support.  A good option for replacing the missing tooth, but it does require shaping the teeth on either side of the gap to fit the bridge.  The other option is a dental implant and crown.

The dental implant is essentially a titanium root that is inserted into the jaw.  Once the dental implant has been integrated a post is fitted to the implant with a crown which fits on the post.  This is a great option for replacing missing teeth as they do not require any preparation of other teeth and the dental impants last many years.  Dental implants have success rates of higher than 95% and are an excellent option for gappy smiles, as well as heping to provide chewing function for back teeth.

Time Dental provides this service for patients from Guildford, and surrounding areas in Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and West sussex.

Cosmetic dentist near Godalming

May 24th, 2012

A patient came to see us at Time Dental looking to improve her smile.  She was unhappy with the shape of her front teeth.  She felt that they were too stumpy and she was also unhappy about the discolouration of them.  She wanted to know her options and what could be done.

On assessment, we noted that she already had four composite veneers on her upper incisors.  They were placed as a teenager as she had decay around her orthodontic brackets at that time.  The composite veneers now looked sightly worn and not at their best.  She had very short teeth and she showed a significant amount of gum when she smiled.  Her teeth on either side of her veneers were also quite dark and discoloured.

To help her we decided her first steps would be to professional tooth whiten.  Teeth whitening is a straight forward and popular procedure when done correctly and with a professional product.  Teeth whitening can result in up to 8 shades lighter which is a great result for an easy procedure.

Once we had whitened her teeth we took some photos and impressions to provide a 3D preveiw of what her new teeth would look like.  We discussed her options and decided that a gu lift and 6 porcelain veneers would give a good result but 8 would be even better.  She opted for the 6 veneers with a view to going to 8 in the future.

The gum lift would reduce the gummy smile and elongate her teeth.  Once that had been carried out, preparation would go underway for the 6 porcelain veneers.  Veneers are a perfect way for improving shape colour and form of teeth. hey are made of laminate porcelain that are handcrafted and bespoke for each individual tooth.   Porcelain veneers do not wear like composite veneers.  They also do not discolour and last much longer as they are mcuh stronger.  Porcelain veneers look their best for 10-15 years.

Time Dental provides porcelain veneers for patients in the Godalming, Guildford, Farnborough, Fleet, Alton and Haslemere area, as well as the surrounding towns and villages in Surrey, West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire counties.

Tooth whitening at dentist near Godalming, Surrey

April 30th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking to freshen his smile.  We discussed what it was that bothered him about his smile.  He said he was unhappy with the colour of them and thought that they looked discouloured.  He wanted a brighter smile and wanted to also surprise his girlfriend whom he was going to see in 3 weeks time.

We discussed his options.  The simplest way to freshen up your smile is to use professional tooth whitening.  It is still one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry services as it is safe and effective if carried out properly.  He was unaware of the types of professional tooth whitening systems.  One option for professional teeth whitening is to use custom fit trays that are loaded with the whitening gel, and then placed in the mouth for 40 minutes.  The process is then repeated once daily for 10-14 days.  This is a gentle way of freshening up your smile and will have a huge impact on your confidence.

Another option is the in-office tooth whitening system.  Some in-office systems use a light source to activate the whitening gel, this is sometimes called laser teeth whitening although no laser is actually used.  Other in-office teeth whitening systems are chemically activated so there is no need for the light.  In-office teeth whitening can boost the shade of your teeth up by a few shades straight away.  We recommend that if you opt for the in-office system, combine it with the professional at home kit to help stabilise the whitening process.  Both types of tooth whitening produce the same results except the in-office is faster.

Many patients at Time Dental have enjoyed the benefits of professional tooth whitening.  Time Dental have provided this services to patients from Godalming as well as the surrounding areas such as Farnborough, Fleet, Aldershot, Winchester, Alton and Guildford.

Tooth whitening and composite bonding at dentist near Guildford

April 12th, 2012

A patient came to see us unhappy about the general colouration of his teeth and especially the white flecks on his two front upper teeth.  They had been present since he could remember and it always bothered him especially when he looked back at photos of himself.

We discussed all his options which ranged from tooth whitening, composite bonding, special etching polish and porcelain veneers.

He initally wanted to take the least invasive path, so we started with professional tooth whitening.  There are two types of tooth whitening.  In-office and the professional tooth whitening kit.  He opted for the professional tooth whitening.

This involved taking impressions of his teeth and making custom fit whitening trays.  The custom fit trays are then loaded with the tooth whitening gel and placed in the mouth for 40 minutes.  This process is repeated over 10-14 days.

Once we had whitened his teeth to as light as they could go we reassesd the white flecks.  In some cases tooth whitening is enough to blend the white flecks, but in his case although there was a huge improvement in colour the white flecks were still there. So we went onto the next step which involved special etching polish.

This involved polishig the white flecks with a special etch which in many cases will remove the discoloured / stained fleck.  However in this instance the white flecks were still present.

Our next step involved composite bonding.  We carefully selected the shade of composite to his surronding tooth and masked the white flecks.  This achieved the result that he wanted and he left for home smiling from ear to ear!
