Chipped teeth at an Alton dentists

January 16th, 2012

A patient came to the practice who was concerned about her uneven smile.  It had bothered her for a long time and needed to find a cosmetic dentist who would be able to help her.

On assessing her mouth, she was putting alot of pressure on her front teeth as she was missing a few of her back chewing teeth.  She also said that she bit her nails when nervous.

One thing that is guaranteed to break and chip your front teeth is nail biting.  The first thing that we had to address is that if she could stop her nail biting habit we could restore her mouth and help her feel confident when smiling again.

She had a couple of options for restoring her teeth.  One option could be composite bonding.  Another option could be to use porcelain veneers to restore her smile.

Composite bonding is the most tooth conservative option. The teeth are minimally prepared under local anaesthetic so that the procedure is completely comfortable.  Composite bonding mimics the natural tooth so under the expert hands of your cosmetic dentist at Time Dental they will look like your natural teeth.  The process is easy for the patient and can have a huge impact in just one session.

In this case the patient opted for composite bonding, however porcelain veneers are also a fantastic alternative.

Tooth whitening at Fleet dentists

January 14th, 2012

Do you drink lots of coffee, red wine, tea or eat lots of curries?  Have you noticed the staining on your teeth? We have so many patients come to see us due to the discolouration of their teeth.  The options for freshening up your smile can vary from tooth whitening, composite bonding and porcelain veneers.

The easiest way to improve your smile is to teeth whiten.  There are two main types but the end result is essentially the same.  Professional teeth whitening and In-office teeth whitening.

Professional teeth whitening invloves placing the tooth whitening gel into custom fit whitening trays which are then placed in the mouth.  The trays are then kept in place for 45 mins.  The whole process is then repeated once a day for 10 -14 days.  Its as easy as that!

In-office teeth whitening involves placing a high concentration of teeth whitening gel which is applied by your dentist which is then kept on for at least 1 hour.  Some systems need a high intense light source to activate the gel (sometimes called Laser teeth whitening), and there are other systems that are chemically activated and do not need a light.  Normally a combined In-office with Professional teeth whitening for 2-3 days gives the desired result.  I would not recommend In-office on its own.

Which type would be best for you?  Well that depends on how fast you want it done.  If you wnat a speedier result go with the In-office tooth whitening system.

Tooth decay and teeth whitening in Farnham

November 3rd, 2011

A client came to see us about his stained and discoloured teeth and was interested in options for whitening them.  He had been thinking about it for a while as he was getting very conscious of the dark colour of his teeth when smiling.  We discussed the two different teeth whitening options which are in-chair teeth whitening and Professional teeth whitening.  The difference being that in-chair teeth whitening is faster than the professional teeth whitening but the end result being generally the same level of whiteness.

However on assessing the health of his teeth before commencing with any type of teeth whitening, we found that he had multiple cavities at the gum line of many of his teeth.  The cavities were due to him having a very strong bite and the enamel chipping away at the gum line.  This left the softer dentine layer exposed and can result in very sensitive teeth- which he said happened every time he had a cold drink and also when tooth brushing.

Tooth whitening is not recommended when you have cavities or holes in the teeth.  The teeth will become incredibly sensitive if not taken care of first.  We decided to postpone the teeth whitening until we had stabilised the health of his teeth and gums first and then look at teeth whitening afterwards.

Straighter teeth at your dentist in Farnham

October 12th, 2011

A client came to see us at Time Dental to see what her options were for straightening her upper front teeth.  They had always been crooked and had really started to bother her.  She was now very conscious of them being crooked and stopped showing her teeth when she was smiling.

On discussion and assessment of what she was looking for, we found that it was only her top front four incisors that really bothered her.  Options for straightening her teeth could be porcelain veneers to correct the position as well as the shape of the incisors.  The main disadavantage of porcelain veneers are that the teeth would have to be prepared to correct the crowding.  Traditional orthodontic braces that could take 8 to 18 months of treatment; clear aligners that are very discreet but may still take 8 months or more to achieve the desired result, or the Inman aligner which is a removable appliance that can move teeth in a matter of weeks.

Our client was interested in the Inman aligner as it moved the teeth very fast, was cost effective and the teeth did not have to be prepared.  The secret to the speed of the inamn aligner is by a spring loaded mechanism that squeezes the teeth into position using very light pressure.  It needs to be worn for a maximium of 20 hours per day and the advantage is that if you have an important meeting or social function you simply take it out and put it back afterwards.

Straight teeth at a dentist in Farnham

August 30th, 2011

We have had a number  of clients approach us and ask about straightening front teeth.  If suitable the revolutionary Inman Aligner may be the way forward.  Many adults are unhappy with mild to moderate overlapping or crowding of the incisors but are not too keen on wearing  fixed braces for a long time.

The Inamn aligner is excellent for straightening the four upper or lower incisors in a matter of weeks.  Traditional braces can take between 6 to 18 months to straighten teeth.  The Inamn aligner works fast because it uses very gentle constant forces which squeeze the teeth into the correct position.  It is a removable appliance which means if you have an important function or meeting you can simply take it out and put it back in later.  It is also much more cost effective than traditional braces.  An alternative option could be to use clear aligners but they require you to change them every 2 weeks and they also take longer to achieve the desired result.

Another option to straighten the incisors is to place porcelain veneers on them.  Veneers are thin porcelain laminates which are bonded onto prepared teeth.  They are an excellent way of improving the shape, colour, size and position of your teeth.  Veneers are bespoke, handcrafted laboratory made restorations and can improve your smile in as little as 2 weeks.

Crowded teeth in Alton, Hampshire

January 25th, 2011

If your upper teeth are crowded and you are self conscious about your smile, it can have a very negative impact on your confidence.  This was exactly what a client had who came to Time Dental in Surrey.  After discussing his concerns with our cosmetic dentist Dr Rashid, he discovered that the client was now reluctant to smile which affected him both socially and at work as he regularly met potential customers face to face.  People would say to him that he always looked very serious and he wanted to show them that he was actually a happy person.

On inspection his upper front teeth were mildly crowded and discoloured and his front incisor was shorter than the other.  The options were discussed.  One option could be after tooth whitening using the Time Dental professional tooth whitening system, he could have four veneers on his upper incisors which would help correct the crowded wonky teeth and by lengthening one of his front incisors, restore balance to his smile.  Veneers are made of a wafer thin porcelain laminate. The porcelain veneer is then bonded onto the tooth with a very strong resin cement.  The veneer looks just like a normal tooth and will last many years.  Porcelain veneers can used to lighten teeth, correct mild crowding, change the shape of a tooth and hide discoloured teeth.

Another option was to move the teeth back into position using the Inman Aligner.  This is a removable orthodontic brace that can move teeth in as little as 8-20 weeks.  It is great for mild crowding cases as teeth are not required to be prepared.  After using the Inman aligner the teeth are whitened to a lighter shade using a professional tooth whitening system and composite bonding is then used on the shorter tooth to bring back the balance.  Composite bonding can be used for a number of situations.  In this case composite or white filling was added to the shorter tooth.

The client chose the second option and can now smile with confidence!
