Porcelain veneers at dentist near Farnborough

April 26th, 2013

Dentist near Farnborough, Hampshire describes what dental veneers are and how they can improve your confidence from Time DentalWhat are porcelain veneers?  Dental veneers are thin porcelain laminates that are bonded to the teeth.

They are custom fit and bespoke crafted by a master ceramist. The ceramists are more like artists of the dental world!  Once the ceramist has added effects to the veneers to make them life like they are sent back to the cosmetic dentist to bond onto the teeth.  Once they are bonded they are very strong and last many years when looked after properly.

Dental veneers can be used on single teeth or multiple teeth to make a dramatic improvement to your smile. They are often prescribed to change the shade of a tooth; improve the shape; alter the form; and improve your smile.

How veneers can improve a smile for patients in Farnborough

August 29th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking for a way to improve his smile.  He had a lot of dentistry over the years but this was more remedial care rather than comprehensive dental care.  He had lost his upper front tooth 20 years ago and had a bridge in place which had now chipped due to something he had eaten.  He not only wanted to know his options about the chipped bridge but he also wanted to feel more confident when smiling.  He had changed jobs 2 years ago and was in a more customer facing position.  He was aware that when he smiled he would cover his mouth.

We discussed his options which really depended on what his final goal was. The options for his chipped bridge were either to replace the bridge for a more aesthetic ceramic bridge, or remove the bridge and place a dental implant.  A dental implant is a great way of replacing missing teeth.  The implant replaces the root of the tooth which then holds a post to which a crown is secured in place.  The advantage of a dental implant is that it helps preserve the boney support around that area and there is no need to prepare the teeth on either side of the gap.

To help him with confidence, we also discussed his options of improving the shape and colour of his adjacent teeth with dental porcelain veneers.  Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of ceramic that are bespoke handcrafted to each individual tooth which are bonded to the tooth to improve shape, colour and form.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Farnborough as well as other areas in Hampshire, Surrey, West sussex and Berkshire.

Dentist near Fleet provides emergency pain free dentistry

August 1st, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental near Fleet for an emergency appointment with a broken tooth.  She had not been to a dentist in 6 years and was very apprehensive as she had a previous bad experience at the dentist which put her off attending regularly for 6 monthly healthy mouth reviews.  He had eaten a seeded bread which result in part of her tooth breaking.  The tooth was now sensitive to cold drinks.

On assessing the tooth the back section of her tooth had indeed broken off.  However the reason why it broke was due to the fact that the tooth had become very decayed.  When decay starts on a tooth and becomes extensive the tooth becomes much weaker.  In her case not only had the tooth now broken but the decay had now reached the nerve of the tooth which is why it was now sensitive to temperature.  If this decay had been caught in its early stages the tooth could have been filled with direct white composite.  Composite fillings when placed by a skilled cosmetic dentist can look like a completely natural tooth.

As the decay had now become so extensive the options for this tooth were either root canal therapy or extraction.  Root canal therapy is a way of keeping your own teeth.  It involves disinfecting the inside of the tooth and filling where the nerve used to be.  The tooth is then often crowned to prevent the tooth from breaking any further.  Crowns can be tooth coloured or metal.  The tooth coloured crowns are made of ceramic which are very strong when bonded to the tooth.  Crowns are an effective way of restoring a weak tooth so that you can bite comfortably and with confidence.

Time Dental provides this service for patients in the Fleet area as well as the surrounding towns in Hampshire, Surrey, West sussex and Berkshire.

Hollywood smile at cosmetic dentists near Alton

April 26th, 2012

A patient came to see us at Time Dental in Farnham looking for a smilemakeover.  She was really bothered by the look of her front teeth and she often found herself covering her mouth when smiling.  When we talked about what it was that bothered her about her smile, she said they were very brown and discoloured, she had 4 composite veneers placed on her teeth years ago due to problems after having braces fitted as a child.  She also didnt like the square stumpy shape of the front teeth.

We discussed her options to improve her smile.  The first thing that could be done to improve the colour of the teeth would be to tooth whiten.  Tooth whitening is a very popular and simple way to freshen your smile.  Whitening your teeth is straight forward and safe to do as long as you use a professional tooth whitening kit supplied by your dentist.  There are a number of over the counter tooth whitening products that are very acidic and can actually damage your teeth and gums.

After using a professional tooth whitening kit the next step would be to improve the shape of the teeth.  In this case we could provide a gum lift that allows us to lengthen the teeth.  A gum lift is a procedure where the gums a recontoured to an improved shape and position.  Once the gum treatment is complete, we woudl provide porcelain veneers to repalce the worn composite veneers.

Porcelain veneers are extremely strong once bonded onto the teeth.  The veneers give a very natural tooth look and will last many years if cared for properly.  Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of porcelain that are handcrafted by a master ceramist in the laboratory.  The veneers are then sent back to the dentist for them to be bonded on and complete your smile makeover.

Time Dental have had many pateints choosing the porcelain veneers option to improve their smile.  They provide this service for patients not only from the Alton area in Hampshire but also Farnborough, Haslemere and Fleet as well as Guildford, Godalming, in Surrey.

Loose Porcelain crown at dentist near Fleet

April 20th, 2012

A very nervous patient came to Time Dental having eaten an apple which caused her front porcelain crown to become loose.  She had a bad experience at a dentist 3 years ago where she had a tooth extracted and she was still in discomfort during the procedure.  That’s enough to put anyone off going to see the dentist, so it was understandable that she was apprehensive this time round.

After assessing the porcelain crown, the x ray showed that the crown also had a post in it.  A number of years ago a horse had hit her in the face which resulted in the tooth breaking.  The tooth had to be root canal treated and as there was not enough tooth left, a post was fitted with a porcelain crown that covered the post.  Post crowns are very vulnerable to hard foods as the sharp hard pressure can result in the tooth snapping by the tip of the post.  This is what happened in this case.  Part of the tooth was still attached to the crown.

When a tooth breaks with an oblique fracture under the gum line the outlook is not good.  The tooth often needs to be extracted.  The good news is that it can be replaced by either a dental implant or a fixed bridge.

A dental implant is a titanium root that is inserted into the jaw. Our specialist implant dentist at Time Dental, Farnham can even in certain cases place an implant the same time an extraction is carried out.  A temporary bridge or denture is placed while the site heals.  In certain cases the temporary crown can be placed immediately onto the implant.  So you would leave smiling and no one would know that you have an implant in place.

Broken tooth, emergency dental care at dentist near Alton

April 19th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental having broken a tooth and was now experiencing sensitivity to cold drinks and cups of tea.  He had not been to see a dentist in over a year and was travelling alot due to work and was now looking for long term continuing care.  He informed me that he had broken teeth in the past and had just put it down to old age.

On assessing the tooth half the outer wall of the tooth had broken off.  There was still a very large mercury filling in place and a small part of the inside of the tooth still present.  It was quite obvious why he was experiencing the sensitivity as his dentine layer was exposed  to the elements.

Boken teeth in mercury amalgam fillings as dental emergencies are quite common.  They reason is not due to old age; its due to the mercury filling expanding and contracting over time, and combined with the downward pressure on eating food causes internal fracture lines of the tooth.  In time either the tooth will break or the filling will break.  Mercury amalgam fillings actuallly weaken your tooth.

In instances such as this the only option for the tooth is to crown it to protect the rest of the tooth.  A crown acts like a bomb shelter that protects the sides as well as the biting surface of the tooth.  They are often recommended when there isn’t mcuh tooth left and the tooth is quite weak.  In order to prevent further breaks the crown encapsulates the whole tooth.

Crowns are bespoke handcrafted restorations made by skilled master ceramists and lab technicians.  They can be made of gold; metal ceramic or all ceramic.  The tooth coloured crowns are the most popular due to them looking very natural.  The metal ceramic crowns are the traditional tooth coloured crowns which have metal underneath the tooth coloured ceramic.  All-ceramic crowns are the best for strength and aesthetics.  The sub structure can be made of zirconia which is extremely strong and durable.

Time Dental provides this service for patients from the Alton area in Hampshire as well as the surrounding towns and villages in Surrey and West Sussex.

Porcelain crowns at a Surrey dentist

February 22nd, 2012

A patient came to see us who was unhappy with his smile.  He was very conscious of a discoloured tooth at the front of his mouth and restricted his smile to not show his teeth.  The tooth had slowly darkened over a period of time.  He felt that if he could get this tooth looking like his other teeth it would restore his smile and his confidence when speaking to people.

On assessing the tooth, we noted that it had already been root treated and it had a very large discoloured composite white filling.  The tooth had been broken in accident some years ago and the only option to save the tooth was to root treat it.  This involved cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth to prevent further infection and abscesses.  The broken tooth had then been repaired with composite bonding.

When a tooth is root treated it becomes dry and brittle and is prone to breaking.  The tooth can also discolour significantly over a period of time.  In this case half the tooth had discoloured and have the tooth was a worn compsite white filling.

We discussed the options which were to either whiten the tooth and replace the old white filling with composite bonding, or place an all-ceramic crown on the tooth to mask the darker colour and help protect it from breaking in the future.

We decided to place a porcelain crown on the tooth which is an excellent choice for this situation.  The tooth was prepared and impressions of the teeth were sent to the master ceramist.  The ceramist then hand crafted the bespoke crown which was then cemented onto the prepared tooth.  That left a very happy patient who was able to smile confidently again.

Broken tooth at Fleet dentists

February 1st, 2012

A client came to see us having broken his tooth eating crunchy food.  He had a bad experience 4 years ago and had been reluctant to see a dentist.  The tooth was not causing him any pain but he knew he had to get it attended to.

On assessing the tooth it had a very large composite white filling with a large chip to the side of the tooth.  White composite fillings are excellent for small to medium sized cavities as they bond to the tooth and can bring the strength of the tooth back.  When they get to  a larger size the tooth can become quite weak and very large white fillings may only last you a few years and will then start to fail due to the high forces being placed on the tooth.

An alternative stronger option would be a porcelain onlay.  These are lab made restorations which are very strong when bonded to the tooth.  They can be designed to protect the biting surface of the tooth and therefore help to protect the cusps and prevent them from breaking.  The edges of the porcelain onlays are normally kept above the gum line and can therefore be easily kept clean.  Onlays are tooth conservative which means that as much of the natural tooth is preserved which helps to provide strength.

Unfortunately for this gentleman, the cavity in his tooth had been left for far too long and the decay was too extensive in the tooth to be able to save.  Had he come much early we could have saved his tooth.

Tooth coloured fillings at Aldershot dentists

January 27th, 2012

It’s becoming very common now to replace old mercury fillings for tooth coloured options.  Advances in dental technology have resulted in tooth coloured options being the better choice in terms of strength and aesthetics.

A client came to see us at Time Dental to see what his options were for replacing his old mercury amalgam fillings.  Amalgam fillings expand and contract over time and result in internal cracks occurring in the teeth.  This is a weak point and it is only a matter of time before the tooth will break or the filling will break.

When mercury fillings are small they are straight forward to replace by a skilled dentist safely and effectively.  Using white composite fillings are the best choice for small to medium sized fillings.  Nowadays small composite fillings can last just as long as amalgam fillings.

When amalgam fillings are large it is better to replace them with either an inlay or onlay.  These are lab made restorations and are much stronger than direct composite fillings.  They can also last over 15 years and give extra support and strength to a tooth that has already been weakened by mercury amalgam fillings.  They are tooth coloured and can be made of a high grade composite or ceramic.  The ceramic inlays are the strongest and will give you great longevity.

January 20th, 2012

Time Dental have a number of adult patients who are very keen to improve their smiles.  One such patient had really been bothered by gaps which she has had for years and wanted to know what the options were for improving her smile.

One option could be to use porcelain veneers.  Porcelain veneers are a great way to have an instant result in improving your smile.  Veneers can also be used to correct discolouration, crowding, and uneven teeth.

Another option is to move the teeth into the correct position with braces.  Many people think of metal train tracks when you mention braces to them.  However there have been huge advances in technology and now with the use of clear aligners virtually invisible braces are now available at Time Dental in Farnham.  Perfect for adults!  Now you can have the smile you have always wanted without the worry of people knowing that you are having it done.

Invisalign uses advanced computer technology in the US to provide a 3D simulation of how your teeth will be moved into the correct position.  The clear aligners are then processed and sent back to your certified Invisalign dentist.  The clear aligners are changed every 2 weeks and incrementaly move the teeth into the desired position.
