Prevent gum disease and bad breath at dentist near Alton

September 20th, 2012

Bad breath can be a severe problem for many people.  It can affect your confidence in social circumstances; meeting people for business and even ruin your chances for finding the right partner.  If you’re unsure you have bad breath, try this little test.  Take some floss and pass it between your back molar teeth; and now smell it.  If it smells bad the chances are your breath will also pick up that smell.

Bad breath or halitosis can be caused by a number of things but did you know that it could also be a sign of gum disease?  Plaque bacteria that is allowed to build up in the mouth becomes hard which is called tartar or calculus. The bacteria release a number of chemicals that destroy the boney support of your teeth.  The gums can become inf lammed and bleed, the teeth can become loose and a bad taste or smell can often be detected.  Gum disease can also occur and not show any signs or symptoms!  That’s why its so important to regularly have your gums screened for gum (periodontal) disease when you visit the dentist and hygienist.

At Time Dental near Alton the hygienist can give you the skills and techniques for ensuring healthy teeth and gums and banish the bad breath.

Time Dental: Private dental care at its best

Gum disease at dentist near Farnborough

August 2nd, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental for a comprehensive healthy mouth assessment.  He was aware that he had receeding gums and he also noted that they were bleeding when he brushed.  He had suffered from heart disease and was taking warfarin which helps to thin the blood.

On assessing his mouth we carried out a periodontal (gum) screening as part of his comprehensive healthy mouth assessment.  This involves using a special measuring instrument that indicates if there are any periodontal pockets.

Gum disease can be a silent disease, it is linked to heart disease, diabetes, strokes and premature births.  In the early stages of gum disease the gums become inflammed.  You may notice bleeding from the gums when brushing.  As the disease progress the plaque bacteria in the mouth gets between the gum and the tooth and starts to destroy the boney support around the tooth.  This leads to periodontal (gum) pockets.  Depending on the depth of the pockets the gum disease could be early, moderate or advanced.  The deeper the pockets the more advanced the gum disease.  Once the bacteria in the mouth gets to the point of destroying the bone this is an irreversible process.  The good news is that it can be stopped from progressing any further, and if the gum disease is caught in the very early stages it is a completely reversible. Gum disease can also cause gum recession, bad breath, abscesses and tooth loss.

To help treat this disease a course of periodontal therapy is prescribed.  This is carried out normally by the hygienist.  The Dental hygienist will take specific recordings of the amount of bone loss, assess the percentage of plaque bacteria and bleeding in the mouth.  With this information a tailored periodontal therapy course will be prescribed.  This involves fine tuning your home dental care routine, identifying risk factors, debriding under the gum line to disinfect and clear the bacteria in the mouth and provide continual support.

Time Dental provides this service for patients in Farnborough area as well as surrounding towns in Hampshire, Surrey, West sussex and Berkshire.

Tooth decay elimanated forever!

November 29th, 2011

A new mouthwash that eliminates the main bacteria that causes tooth decay has been tested on a small group of individuals in the US.

In a recent clinical study, 12 subjects who rinsed just one time with the experimental mouthwash experienced a nearly complete elimination of the S. mutans bacteria over the entire four-day testing period.

This new mouthwash is the product of nearly a decade of research conducted by Dr Wenyuan Shi, chair of the oral biology section at the UCLA School of Dentistry.

Tooth decay or cavities takes place due to a process called demineralization.

“Demineralization” simply describes the fact that mineral content  have been dissolved out of a tooth’s hard tissues.  Demineralization takes place when a tooth is exposed to acids. It’s  a process that takes place a little bit every time a tooth is subjected to another acid attack.

So where do the acids come from?

The acids that cause tooth demineralization (cavity formation) are produced by specific types of bacteria that live in dental plaque (primarily lactobacilli and mutans streptococci).

When we eat and drink food, we create waste products. The bactiera do the same thing and their waste products are the very same acidic compounds that cause tooth demineralization.

While trials still need to be carried out on the new mouthwash, make sure you still visit your dentist and hygienist to ensure you maintain a healthy mouth.

brush baby brush

June 29th, 2011

Brushing your kids teeth is really important.  The best thing to do is to start brushing your babys’ teeth as soon as they start to come through.  As they get older let them watch you brush your own teeth and get them to do have a go a doing theirs while you brush yours.  Try to make it fun!  Kids will mimic their parents behaviours, so if they see you do it they are more likely to do it themsleves.  Unfortunately my daughter refused to mimic this particular habit even though she saw me do it every day!

I have a two year old daughter and let me tell you brushing time is a real challenge!  Some kids love doing it, others don’t.  My daughter fell into the later category.  We tried a number of different techiniques.  Sometimes she liked having an elecrtic toothbrush in her mouth othertimes she would only let me use a manual toothbrush, and sometimes she just plain refused.  However no matter how hard it was I still persisted.  It’s still a struggle sometimes especially when it’s her bedtime and she is feeling cranky.  Now I make up songs as I brush her teeth to make it fun for her.  Try adapting a nursery rhyme to do with brushing teeth.

Make sure you use a small headed toothbrush and only use kids toothpaste as appropriate for the age.  I make sure the paste has fluoride in and only use a smear of it on the brush as toddlers tend to swallow the toothpaste.  Never let babies go to bed with a bottle of milk as this can cause what’s called bottle caries.  Try the techniques above, but always persevere as preventative techinques to dental decay are always best.

Hygiene services for Fleet, Hampshire

February 15th, 2011

You visit the dentist every 6 months for an examination like you’re supposed to, as that is all you need to do to look after your teeth, right?  Wrong!  Gum health is so important, and is often underestimated by people.  Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a disorder that damages the gums.  Gums protect the roots of the tooth.  Gum disease contributes to a receding gum line that can cause the weakening of teeth and eventually tooth loss.  Many people aren’t aware that they have it, but the signs and symptoms can be quite easy to detect.  Gum disease is diagnosed by bleeding, swollen and tender gums, loose teeth, receding gums and changes to the way permanent teeth or dentures fit together when biting.

Did you know…….

  • Periodontal disease is the number-one cause of tooth loss.
  • 30% of people may be genetically susceptible to gum disease
  • Emerging reports have linked gum disease to other medical conditions such as heart disease
  • Gum disease affects all races and ethnicities equally.
  • Millions of people have gum disease; they just don’t know it yet.
  • The mass of tissue in the oral cavity is equivalent to the skin on your arm that extends from the wrist to the elbow, that’s a lot of tissue that needs to be kept healthy!

Routine appointments with the hygienist are so important at maintaining a healthy mouth, and at Time Dental we are very lucky to have a resident expert who provides are hygiene services.  Patricia has had rave reviews from all our clients, and as a result her appointment book fills up fast!  In her sessions, as well as giving your mouth a full clean, scale and polish, Patricia will also guide you through correct brushing techniques specifically for you so you can continue to care for your mouth properly at home.

So call 01252 723008 and book in today for an initial consultation and start the journey towards a healthier mouth.

A Breath of Fresh Air

September 10th, 2010

Let’s be honest, even without the onion and garlic consumption only usually found in middle-Mediterranea, we all suffer from bad breath at some point and although there are plenty of ways to get rid of it – mouthwash, mints and even milk among the most common – but how about preventing it?

The best way to do so is pure and simple dental hygiene!  Halitosis, as bad breath is known in the dental world, is basically the breeding of bacteria in your mouth.  Bacteria spread FAST and in no time at all after you have brushed, flossed and rinsed with mouthwash will they be back to their smelly ways.

The tongue is a part of oral hygiene that is often overlooked however, it can hide some of the most offensive smells.  You see, your tongue is covered in millions of tiny filaments that harbor food particles and bacteria as if it was their second home.  The secret’s now out that the most simple way to overcome this is to brush you tongue(!) – many toothbrushes now even come with a tongue-brush on their reverse side.

If this doesn’t solve the problem, then don’t fret; you probably just skipped your last toothy grinned examination!  The body is a finely tuned machine; if something is wrong, it will let you know in the most polite way possible and in some cases, a bout of bad breath can mean the beginnings of a cavity, broken filling or maybe an infection.

Do check it out.  Masking potential problems can often lead to more serious issues down the line; so get things sorted, then begin the prevention process with Time!

What Dentists call Good Hygiene…

August 8th, 2010

Every time I go to the dentist, on my way out I am given a five minute lecture of how different cleaning techniques using brushes, floss and mouthwash all help to keep good hygiene in check.  We all know what to do and yet every time I get home from the dentist my daily routine doesn’t change – and I’m betting the majority of you are the same…  The thing is, my teeth do not look like something out of a horror movie, so why bother?

Good oral hygiene is not just about your teeth giving that subtle twinkle every time you smile; it goes a whole lot deeper; and that sparkle is just a bonus.  Besides, if you really want that pop-star gleam then well, you’ve heard of Tooth Whitening… but I am talking about the deeper clean.

Tooth Whitening is great for confidence boosting but if your teeth are not getting a good daily ritual of Brush, Floss and Mouthwash then you may still be in trouble my friend.  Within a week, you can get this task down to 5 minutes once every morning and once every night and will be well on your way to preventing the dreaded gum disease and tooth decay.

I have had an insight into the Time Dental practice and have seen the way oral hygiene really works.  As it turns out, when a hygienist and dentist say “have an examination every 6 – 12 months, and try alternative healthy options instead of sugary drinks”, they MEAN it!  These people actually care about you and your teeth; they want to see you smile with all of natures natural beauty… and if you think Gum Disease and Tooth Decay is bad, just Google ‘Periodontitis’ and you’ll see what I mean!”

So I’m going to brush the dust off my roll of floss, give my teeth a fresh lease of life and start grinning that grin today.

I encourage you to take this information and do the same!
