US creates “tooth tattoo” to detect gum disease

A research team in the US has created a a tooth tattoo made of gold, silk and graphite that temporarily attaches to the surface of a tooth and measures the bacteria levels in the mouth.

The sensor can give an indication of when the bacteria levels in the mouth are spiking over a number of hours or even days.  This can help develop a bespoke treatment course according to the results.

Saliva can contain many indicators of disease so the sensor may also detect diseases beyond the mouth.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria.  Plaque also known as a biofilm, is made up of millions of bacteria.  There are many different microbes contained in plaque, and when the plaque bacteria is not removed on a daily basis, trouble begins.  Prevention is the best way forward.  A regular dental hygiene therapy programme and healthy mouth reviews at your dentist is a good starting point to get advice on preventing gum disease.

Gum disease can be a silent disease with no warnings.  However you can often have symptoms of bad breath, bleeding gums, receding gum line, sensitive teeth, and loose teeth. Studies have also shown links between gum disease, premature births, strokes, heart disease and diabetes.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham looking to improve the look of her smile.  She wanted to know her options for closing the spaces between her upper front teeth.  The options were either using orthodontic braces to close the spaces or composite bonding for immediate space closing.  She had not been to a dentist in three years and so decided to have a comprehensive healthy mouth examination as she was looking for a dentist to continue her dental health care.

After fully assessing her mouth she had significant bleeding of the gums and a build up of tartar under the gum line.  These were signs of mild gum disease.  Plaque bacteria builds on the teeth everyday.  When the plaque bacteria calcifies this becomes tartar which sticks to the teeth.  The bacteria can then progress to below the gum line and begin to destroy the boney support around the teeth resulting in periodontal pockets.

Let’s be honest, even without the onion and garlic consumption only usually found in middle-Mediterranea, we all suffer from bad breath at some point and although there are plenty of ways to get rid of it – mouthwash, mints and even milk among the most common – but how about preventing it?

The best way to do so is pure and simple dental hygiene!  Halitosis, as bad breath is known in the dental world, is basically the breeding of bacteria in your mouth.  Bacteria spread FAST and in no time at all after you have brushed, flossed and rinsed with mouthwash will they be back to their smelly ways.

The tongue is a part of oral hygiene that is often overlooked however, it can hide some of the most offensive smells.  You see, your tongue is covered in millions of tiny filaments that harbor food particles and bacteria as if it was their second home.  The secret’s now out that the most simple way to overcome this is to brush you tongue(!) – many toothbrushes now even come with a tongue-brush on their reverse side.
