6 top tips to beat bad breath by dentist in Farnham, Surrey

April 22nd, 2013

How to beat bad breath with top tips from dentist in Farnham, Surrey

In our last blog we discussed the reasons for bad breath or halitosis.  Well try these top tips to beat the bad breath:

1. Gently clean the tongue. Twice a day after brushing your teeth gently brush the tongue which will remove the biofilm and debris that causes bad breath. Avoid scrapping the v-shaped taste buds at the very back of the tongue.  Either use your tooth brush or a tongue scrapper.

2.Eating a healthy breakfast with rough foods helps clean the very back of the tongue.

3. Chewing sugar free gum after meals.  If your mouth is dry  or when yo cannot perform oral hygiene measures after meals chewing helps stimulate saliva and can have a mechanical washing action for the food debris in the mouth

4. Take a glass of water to bed. The mouth can become very dry at night so having a small sip of water can help to keep the mouth moist and reduce bad breath.

5. Gargling just before bedtime with an effective mouthwash. Choose mouthwashes which have no alcohol as this can dry the mouth.

6. Maintaining a proper dental regime. This includes tooth brushing, interdental cleaning with floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque bacteria from between the teeth and regular visits to your dentist and dental hygienist to ensure you have the best home care and up to date preventative advice.

Dentist near Alton describes the causes of bad breath

April 18th, 2013

Time Dental near Alton in Hampshire describes why the tongue is the main cause of bad breath

Did you know that bad breath or halitosis is the third most common reason for seeking dental help?

The intensity of bad breath can differ during the day due to eating certain foods (such as garlic, onions, fish), smoking and alcohol consumption.  During the night as the mouth is inactive and is exposed to less oxygen the odor is usually worse on waking (morning breath).  Bad breath is often temporary and can disappear when eating, teeth brushing, interdental cleaning and using a mouthwash.

25% of the population suffer from chronic bad breath and there are many causes of this condition.

The most common cause of mouth related halitosis is the bacteria on the tongue.  The bacteria on the tongue can account for 80-90% of cases of mouth-related bad breath. The best way to remove the bacteria from the tongue is to use your toothbrush or a tongue scraper.

Advanced gum (periodontal) disease is a common cause for severe halitosis. Waste products from the bacteria growing below the gum has a foul smell and has clinically demonstrated to cause a very intense bad breath. Visiting your dental hygienist for a course of periodontal therapy will hugely improve the freshness of your breath as well as your gum health.

The nose, tonsils, oesophagus and stomach are other causes of bad breath as well as medical conditions such as diabetes and chronic lung problems.

A simple test to see if you have halitosis is to lick the back of your wrist, let the saliva dry for a minute and smell the result. Another way is to scrape the back of the tongue with a plastic spoon and smell the drying residue.

Dental hygiene therapy dramatically reduces the risk of stroke

April 3rd, 2013

Poor dental hygiene can lead to heart disease from dentist in Farnham, Surrey

Another reason to regularly see your hygienist.  Continuing care with your dental hygienist can help reduce the risk of strokes.

Researchers from a general hospital in Taiwan recruited 29,000 volunteers with no history of heart disease over the age of 60.  They were questioned about how often they went to see their dentist and hygienist for dental hygiene therapy and then tracked them for five years to see who went on to develop atrial fibrillation.

The international Journal of Cardiology published the results that showed patients who had dental hygiene therapy at least once a year were a third less likely to develop an abnormal heartbeat and the more frequently they had it done, the bigger the benefits.  It is thought that bacteria increase the rate at which arteries get blocked.

US creates “tooth tattoo” to detect gum disease

November 28th, 2012

A research team in the US has created a a tooth tattoo made of gold, silk and graphite that temporarily attaches to the surface of a tooth and measures the bacteria levels in the mouth.

The sensor can give an indication of when the bacteria levels in the mouth are spiking over a number of hours or even days.  This can help develop a bespoke treatment course according to the results.

Saliva can contain many indicators of disease so the sensor may also detect diseases beyond the mouth.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria.  Plaque also known as a biofilm, is made up of millions of bacteria.  There are many different microbes contained in plaque, and when the plaque bacteria is not removed on a daily basis, trouble begins.  Prevention is the best way forward.  A regular dental hygiene therapy programme and healthy mouth reviews at your dentist is a good starting point to get advice on preventing gum disease.

Prevent gum disease and bad breath at dentist near Alton

September 20th, 2012

Bad breath can be a severe problem for many people.  It can affect your confidence in social circumstances; meeting people for business and even ruin your chances for finding the right partner.  If you’re unsure you have bad breath, try this little test.  Take some floss and pass it between your back molar teeth; and now smell it.  If it smells bad the chances are your breath will also pick up that smell.

Bad breath or halitosis can be caused by a number of things but did you know that it could also be a sign of gum disease?  Plaque bacteria that is allowed to build up in the mouth becomes hard which is called tartar or calculus. The bacteria release a number of chemicals that destroy the boney support of your teeth.  The gums can become inf lammed and bleed, the teeth can become loose and a bad taste or smell can often be detected.  Gum disease can also occur and not show any signs or symptoms!  That’s why its so important to regularly have your gums screened for gum (periodontal) disease when you visit the dentist and hygienist.

At Time Dental near Alton the hygienist can give you the skills and techniques for ensuring healthy teeth and gums and banish the bad breath.

cosmetic dentures at Surrey dentist in Farnham

September 19th, 2012

Dentures are not what they used to be.  Now you can have cosmetic dentures that mimic the look of natural teeth so that you can have a confident smile.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey looking for help to smile confidently.  He had neglected his dental health and only attended when he was in pain.  This had led to a patch up style dentistry and was not beneficial for his overall dental health.  He had a very bad experience as a child and now he was in his mid seventies and was still apprehensive about dental care.  He had finally decided to explore comprehensive dental care and was looking for a dentist that would provide cosmetic dentistry as well as helping him keep his  mouth healthy.

On assessing his mouth the majority of his remaining teeth had severe gum disease and decay.  This had resulted in hiss teeth becoming very loose and gums sore and bleeding.  When gum disease and dental decay has taken hold to this extent there would be no option but to remove the teeth.  Fortunately this did not mean that he would be left with a gummy smile.  Immediate cosmetic dentures can provisionally provide a confident smile and allow him to chew without being in discomfort.  Once healing of the gums had taken place, the options could be to provide a fixed bridge with dental implants, a cosmetic denture retained by dental implants or a new set of stable dentures.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Surrey as well as surrounding areas of Hampshire, West sussex, and Berkshire.

How to maintain healthy gums at dentist near Alton

September 5th, 2012

Gum disease can be a silent disease with no warnings.  However you can often have symptoms of bad breath, bleeding gums, receding gum line, sensitive teeth, and loose teeth. Studies have also shown links between gum disease, premature births, strokes, heart disease and diabetes.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham looking to improve the look of her smile.  She wanted to know her options for closing the spaces between her upper front teeth.  The options were either using orthodontic braces to close the spaces or composite bonding for immediate space closing.  She had not been to a dentist in three years and so decided to have a comprehensive healthy mouth examination as she was looking for a dentist to continue her dental health care.

After fully assessing her mouth she had significant bleeding of the gums and a build up of tartar under the gum line.  These were signs of mild gum disease.  Plaque bacteria builds on the teeth everyday.  When the plaque bacteria calcifies this becomes tartar which sticks to the teeth.  The bacteria can then progress to below the gum line and begin to destroy the boney support around the teeth resulting in periodontal pockets.

The best approach to eliminate gum disease and achieve a healthy mouth is prevention. A good home regime of a healthy diet, regular tooth brushing and interdental cleaning combined with seeing your dentist and hygienist for a continuing hygiene therapy programme will be a huge benefit to your dental health.

Gum disease at dentist near Farnborough

August 2nd, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental for a comprehensive healthy mouth assessment.  He was aware that he had receeding gums and he also noted that they were bleeding when he brushed.  He had suffered from heart disease and was taking warfarin which helps to thin the blood.

On assessing his mouth we carried out a periodontal (gum) screening as part of his comprehensive healthy mouth assessment.  This involves using a special measuring instrument that indicates if there are any periodontal pockets.

Gum disease can be a silent disease, it is linked to heart disease, diabetes, strokes and premature births.  In the early stages of gum disease the gums become inflammed.  You may notice bleeding from the gums when brushing.  As the disease progress the plaque bacteria in the mouth gets between the gum and the tooth and starts to destroy the boney support around the tooth.  This leads to periodontal (gum) pockets.  Depending on the depth of the pockets the gum disease could be early, moderate or advanced.  The deeper the pockets the more advanced the gum disease.  Once the bacteria in the mouth gets to the point of destroying the bone this is an irreversible process.  The good news is that it can be stopped from progressing any further, and if the gum disease is caught in the very early stages it is a completely reversible. Gum disease can also cause gum recession, bad breath, abscesses and tooth loss.

To help treat this disease a course of periodontal therapy is prescribed.  This is carried out normally by the hygienist.  The Dental hygienist will take specific recordings of the amount of bone loss, assess the percentage of plaque bacteria and bleeding in the mouth.  With this information a tailored periodontal therapy course will be prescribed.  This involves fine tuning your home dental care routine, identifying risk factors, debriding under the gum line to disinfect and clear the bacteria in the mouth and provide continual support.

Time Dental provides this service for patients in Farnborough area as well as surrounding towns in Hampshire, Surrey, West sussex and Berkshire.
