How to deal with dental phobia or nervous at dentist near Guildford, Surrey

November 7th, 2012

Lots of people are nervous about coming to the dentist.  This can stem from bad experiences as a child and the negative emotions are brought all the way through to adulthood.  There are ways to deal with dental phobia and one such option is sedation.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham which is very close to Guildford in Surrey.  He only attended when he was in pain and the last time he went to see a dentist was 10 years ago.  He was aware that he had multiple teeth that were badly broken and new they could not be saved.  He was terrified at the thought of having dental treatment.

We discussed his options which included relaxation and breathing exercises as well as the option of IV sedation. This is where a sedative is given which helps you to relax. It is important to note this is not like a general anesthetic where you are asleep.  IV sedation is conscious sedation meaning that you are awake and can communicate with the dentist which is important, however you have a very fuzzy, vague recollection of this and will not remember much of the treatment.  IV sedation is completely safe and is a great way of dealing with anxiety when visiting the dentist.

How to close gaps in your smile at dentist near Guildford

September 13th, 2012

Gappy smiles can have a real impact on your confidence.  A patient came to Time Dental near Guildford looking for options to brighten her smile and close the spaces between her upper front teeth.  She had orthodontic braces in the past and as she had not worn her retainer so the gaps had opened up and she was very conscious when smiling; to the point where she would cover her mouth with her hand every time she laughed.  She wanted to know what her options were to help her feel confident again.

Once we had assessed her smile we discussed whether she would like the spaces closed using orthodontic braces.  She had heard about clear aligners that were very discreet adult braces and also the Inman aligner which helps to straighten teeth in a matter of weeks.  She told me she was going on holiday in four weeks and would like to look good for that if possible.

In such a small time frame we discussed an alternative option which was composite bonding.  This is a technique that is used to bond tooth coloured composite filling in order to reshape teeth, close gaps, lengthen teeth and improve your smile with immediate effect.  She had discoloured teeth so she was keen to tooth whiten first and then match the composite bonding to her brighter smile.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Guildford as well as other areas in Surrey, West sussex, Berskshire and Hampshire.

Why replace missing teeth with dental implants at dentist near Guildford?

June 28th, 2012

A patient near Guildford came to Time Dental with a swelling at the gum line on one of her teeth.  She had no pain from it but she noticed the swelling was now getting bigger.

On assessing the tooth in question, it had already been root canal treated and had a crown on top.  The swelling origin was from midway up the root of the tooth.  On further investigation the root had a horizontal break thorough it which rendered the tooth unrestorable.  The only option for the tooth was extraction.

This particular tooth was a molar chewing tooth and so the chewing function for the patient would have been decreased after extraction. The other problem that may occur when losing a tooth is teeth drifting and tilting into the space.  This can result in a change of the bite and also cause gum problems as food would now get stuck between the open spaces of the teeth that have tilted.  The patient was keen on replacing the missing tooth and we discussed her options for filling the gap.

One fixed option would be to have a bridge.  This uses the teeth on either side for support.  A good option for replacing the missing tooth, but it does require shaping the teeth on either side of the gap to fit the bridge.  The other option is a dental implant and crown.

The dental implant is essentially a titanium root that is inserted into the jaw.  Once the dental implant has been integrated a post is fitted to the implant with a crown which fits on the post.  This is a great option for replacing missing teeth as they do not require any preparation of other teeth and the dental impants last many years.  Dental implants have success rates of higher than 95% and are an excellent option for gappy smiles, as well as heping to provide chewing function for back teeth.

Time Dental provides this service for patients from Guildford, and surrounding areas in Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and West sussex.

Tooth whitening and composite bonding at dentist near Guildford

April 12th, 2012

A patient came to see us unhappy about the general colouration of his teeth and especially the white flecks on his two front upper teeth.  They had been present since he could remember and it always bothered him especially when he looked back at photos of himself.

We discussed all his options which ranged from tooth whitening, composite bonding, special etching polish and porcelain veneers.

He initally wanted to take the least invasive path, so we started with professional tooth whitening.  There are two types of tooth whitening.  In-office and the professional tooth whitening kit.  He opted for the professional tooth whitening.

This involved taking impressions of his teeth and making custom fit whitening trays.  The custom fit trays are then loaded with the tooth whitening gel and placed in the mouth for 40 minutes.  This process is repeated over 10-14 days.

Once we had whitened his teeth to as light as they could go we reassesd the white flecks.  In some cases tooth whitening is enough to blend the white flecks, but in his case although there was a huge improvement in colour the white flecks were still there. So we went onto the next step which involved special etching polish.

This involved polishig the white flecks with a special etch which in many cases will remove the discoloured / stained fleck.  However in this instance the white flecks were still present.

Our next step involved composite bonding.  We carefully selected the shade of composite to his surronding tooth and masked the white flecks.  This achieved the result that he wanted and he left for home smiling from ear to ear!

Teeth whitening at cosmetic dentist near Guildford

A client was due to get married in April and came to see us a couple of weeks ago looking to improve her smile.  She had generalised discoloured teeth with prominent white flecks on her upper front central incisors.  She wanted to look her best for the wedding day and wanted to know what her options were with such a limited time frame.

We assessed her mouth and made sure her teeth and gums were healthy and that she did not have any white composite fillings onher front teeth.  We offered her the two types of professional tooth whitening systems to help to achieve whiter teeth and improve her smile.

There are two main options with professional tooth whitening.  One is the in-office system, and the other is the professional at home kit.

The in-office system can whiten your teeth in as little as an hour. So it is great for someone who has a tight deadline to meet.  Some in-office systems use a bright light soemtimes called laser whitening.  This uses a light source that activates the tooth whitening gel which is placed on the teeth.  Other systems do not need a light source and are chemically activated.  The in-office tooth whitening system can whiten your teeth by a few shades straight away.  We normally recommend combining this with the at-home kit to get the best result as it helps stabilise the tooth whitening procedure.

The professional at home kit use a lower concentrated gel which is placed into custom fit whitening trays which are then worn for 40 minutes per day.  It normally takes 10-14 sessions of professional tooth whitening to achieve a great result.

You need to make sure that your mouth is dentally fit and healthy and that if you have crowns, veneers or composite fillings on the teeth that are to be whitened they will stay the same shade. Porcelain and composite fillings do not whiten.

Cosmetic dentist near Guildford, Surrey

March 26th, 2012

A patient came to see us who was bothered about his overlapping lower front teeth.  He previously had braces as a teenager, however in the last few years he noticed that his teeth were moving and going back to the way they used to be.  He had not been to see a dentist for a thorough dental health check in a number of years and although he was not experiencing any pain decided to register and see what could be done about his crowded lower teeth.

Unfortunately the crowded lower teeth were the least of his problems.  As he had not been to see a dentist in years he was not given proper dietry advice and his teeth had mutiple areas of decay.

Tooth decay or caries is the demineralisation of the enamel caused by products of plaque bacteria in the mouth.  The bacteria love a sugary environment  which they produce into acids that destory tooth enamel.  Once the bacteria has broken thorough the enamel surface and into the dentine layer the decal can spread very quickly to the nerve and give symptoms of toothache.

The best thing to do is ensure that you have a healthy diet and that you do not snack on high sugar food and drinks.  Make sure you drink plenty of water as this can remove large particles of food debris.  Brush your teeth twice a day and also clean in between your teeth.  Use a flouride toothpaste. Regularly visit your dentist and hygienist for health checks.  This will ensure that things are caught early and the preventative advice can be given.

In the case of this patient, he wanted to achieve a healthy mouth as his priority.  We therefore had to place a number of white composite fillings after having removed the decay to help him achieve dental health.  The composite fillings are tooth coloured so they blend with the natural tooth surface.  As they also stick to the tooth, they also help to bring back the strength of it back.

Gum disease and bad breath near Guildford dentists

February 23rd, 2012

A patient came to see us having not been to se a dentist for 2 years.  He had a previous bad experience where the anaesthetic did not work properly and found his treatment very painful.  He had read that we provide pain-free dentistry and was keen to get his mouth in good shape as his teeth were breaking at the back, but surprisingly he was in no pain.

On discussions with him, he was keen to get his mouth healthy and retain the rest of his teeth and possibly think about filling the gaps where he had previously lost his teeth. He also mentioned that his gums did bleed occasionally.

On assessing his dental health he had multiple teeth that were decaying and as a result had huge holes which were not restorable.  He also had very red gums and they bled easily when checking their health.  As a general rule gums should be pink, tight and not bleed when you brush or floss.  The tartar build up was extensive and the plaque build was also heavy in his mouth.  The gums were in such poor condition that the bone around the teeth were being destroyed which resulted in gum (periodontal) pockets.  Moderate to severe gum disease can cause bad breath as well as heart disease.  People who are diabetic, smokers,  immunocompromised and have a bad diet are more at risk of gum disease.

Gum disease can also be silent with no visible symptoms.  That’s why it is so important to regularly see your dentist and hygienist so that they can screen you and ensure your mouth stays healthy.
