Headaches caused by teeth clenching from dentist near Godalming

May 9th, 2013

teeth clenching and how to stop the damage from Time Dental near Godalming, SurreyBruxism describes a range of related behaviours including teeth grinding, gnashing and clenching of the jaw.  Its usually a subconscious behavior performed whilst asleep.

Bruxism can lead to permanent damage to the teeth as the enamel is worn away. However it can also lead to headaches and disorders of the TMJ (temperomandibular joint).  Bruxism sufferers are three times more likely to suffer headaches as well as aching jaw and face muscles; earache; tightness/ stiffness of the shoulders; limitation of mouth opening; sleep disruption; excess tooth mobility; inflamed and receding gums.  A stressful lifestyle is also a factor in bruxing.

The most effective way to reduce the tension from bruxing is to wear a night guard or occlusal splint.  This is a device that is kept in the mouth overnight and acts as a spacer so you avoid tooth to tooth contact as well as deprogramming the muscles to reduce the tension.

Tips for relaxation from dental anxiety from dentist near Godalming

April 30th, 2013

Dental anxiety and how to cope by dentist near Godalming, Surrey at Time DentalMany people feel anxious or apprehensive when they visit the dentist.  The most common reason for this is a bad experience in the past.  Often a negative childhood experience that is carried on through to adulthood.  Other reasons can be fear of the unknown; not being sure of what is happening in the mouth; fear of needles; feeling claustrophobic.

If you suffer from any of these its important to discuss this with your dentist. Hopefully your gentle dentist will have empathy and understand your concerns.  Try these tips the next time you feel anxious about your trip to the dentist.

1. Breathe. I know this sounds simple but the number of people who forget to focus on breathing is huge.  This may help: try placing your hands on your tummy. As you SLOWLY breathe in through your nose you should be able to feel your hands rising, as you breathe out SLOWLY you should feel them dropping.  This technique makes you breathe with your diaphragm and aids in relaxation.

2. Let your body release tension. When you are stressed your shoulders can hunch up and your muscles in your body become tense. When lying in the dental chair starting form your toes scrunch them up and then relax them, then tense your calf muscles and relax them; work your way slowly up the body tensing and relaxing.  This help you to focus on letting your body muscles relax and also distracts your mind from what is happening at the mouth end.

3. Let your mind run wild!  Another tip is to think about your favorite past-time, activity or holiday; and focus on that. For example if you had a great beach holiday: how you felt on the beach with the sound of the waves and the feeling of the sand between your toes and the warm sunshine on your face.  The greater the detail the more this technique will work for you.

Adult orthodontic dental braces from dental practice near Godalming in Surrey

How can you get straight, white teeth fast?  Adult orthodontic braces have come a long way from metal train track braces.  Now you can achieve straight teeth in a matter of weeks.  Take the case above.  This result was achieved in just 18 weeks.

We used a discreet removable orthodontic appliance called the Inman aligner to straighten these teeth.  The secret to the success for this treatment is that the adult orthodontic braces uses very gentle pressure to squeeze the teeth into the right position.  No discomfort and a fast result! Once we had straightened the teeth we carried out tooth whitening and then composite bonding on the edges of the teeth to restore their shape.

Top tips naturally whiter teeth from dentist near Godalming

November 8th, 2012

A recent study showed that 45% of adults are unhappy with their smile.  A large portion of these would like a brighter, whiter smile.  There are a number of ways to naturally whiten your teeth.

1. This might be obvious but brushing your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes with a good electric tooth brush is a great way to remove superficial stains and plaque bacteria.

2. Using floss or interdental brushes.  Plaque bacteria can appear as creamy yellow.  If this hardens it becomes tartar that can stain easily over time.  Cleaning in between your teeth can help remove the plaque bacteria keeping your gums healthy and your teeth brighter.

3. Eating cheese after a meal can help to neutralize the acid and strengthen the teeth as it contains calcium and phosphate ions which can in turn help the appearance of teeth

4. Eating crispy foods such as apples, celery and carrots.  They have a naturally abrasive element which can help to remove stains.  Abrasive foods should still be eaten in moderation as excess can actually cause damage to your teeth.

5. Strawberries have an acidic content that also helps to whiten your teeth.  As strawberries also have natural sugars eating too many can end up causing acid erosion and tooth decay.

6. Drinking through a straw.  Coloured drinks can stain your teeth.  Drinking through a straw bypasses the teeth and avoids staining them.

7.  Baking soda.  Due to the abrasive nature of baking soda it can help to improve the appearance of teeth.  A word of caution this can permanently damage your teeth if used excessively.

The easiest way to improve the colour of your teeth is to professionally tooth whiten them.  Speak to your dentist to ensure you are suitable.  Tooth whitening is safe and easy to do.  Call us to see how we can help.

Straight teeth with Adult braces at dentist near Godalming, Surrey

October 17th, 2012

Adult braces are becoming more popular these days.  There’s no need to have metal train track braces.  Now you can have straight teeth with Adult orthodontics to hep give you confidence.

A patient came to Time Dental near Godalming looking for options to straighten his upper teeth.  He had orthodontic braces as a child and his teeth had now become crowded again.  This is a very common occurrence due to retainers after the orthodontic treatment not being worn.

On assessing his mouth his main concern was the upper front teeth overlapping.  His options were fixed orthodontic braces that can be tooth coloured running on the outside of the teeth or they can also be fixed onto the inner side of the teeth.  Another option would be clear aligner adult orthodontic braces such as Invisalign.  These are virtually invisible and the clear aligners are changed every 2 weeks to help move the teeth into a straight position.  Another option is the Inman aligner.  This is a removable orthodontic adult brace that uses very gentle pressure to squeeze the teeth into a straighter alignment.  The treatment time can take between 8-18 weeks depending on the initial degree of crowding.

Time Dental provides this service for patients in Godalming as well as other areas in Surrey.

August 31st, 2012

Acupuncture has proven benefits. Fact.

Many people have acupuncture for medical problems, but did you know that acupuncture can also help when you are at the dentist?  If you suffer from a sensitive gag reflex, or if you grind or clench your teeth, or even if you are very nervous- acupuncture can help.  Acupuncture has a scientific background and the efficacy has been tested in a number of clinical trials including pain management, facial pain, TMD and increasing of the pain threshold.

Acupuncture placed at very specific points on the face and the hands can have a huge beneficial impact.  If used in conjunction with breathing techniques if you are nervous or have a gag reflex or if you have TMJD (temperomandibular joint dysfunction) combined with a special deprogramming nightguard- This can really help.

Our team at Time Dental are offering this extra service to their patients.  It’s not for everyone, but if it works for you to help calm the anxiety why not give it a try?

Straight teeth with adult invisible braces at dentist near Godalming

August 17th, 2012

Gaps between your front teeth when smiling can have a real knock on affect to your confidence.  Thats exactly what a patient came to see us about at Time Dental near Godalming.  He was a young guy in his early twenties and had always been bothered by the space between his upper front teeth.  He wanted to know what his options were.

We discussed his smile and his options.  The first option was to use the traditional train track braces.  He ruled this out as he wanted something which was not so visible.  The other options were the newer invisible braces. The first option is to use clear aligners for adults.  This relatively new adult orthodontic braces system uses clear aligners which are virtually invisible to straighten the teeth.  Each aligner is worn for 2 weeks and as they are changed they incrementaly move the teeth into a straighter position.  There are many different systems available and your Time Dental dentist will be able to advise which adult clear aligner brace is suitable for you.  Treatment time can take between 8-24 months depending on the type of movements required.

The other option was the Inman aligner.  The new wonder brace.  This is a removable adult orthodontic brace that use use special springs to gently squeeze your teeth into the correct position.  A great option if you want fast results as you can achieve straight teeth in as little as 8-16 weeks.

How to achieve a healthy mouth with cosmetic dentistry at dentist near Godalming

July 5th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking for a new cosmetic dentist.  He had not been for a dental health check for a long time and was aware that he had lots of old mercury fillings that would need replacing and wanted tooth coloured fillings in place. He was looking for a dentist to help him keep his teeth and mouth healthy and so he did some research for dentists local to him and liked the reviews that patients had written about us.

On assessing his mouth he did indeed have a number of large mercury amalgam fillings that were failing.  There were gaps between the tooth and the filling and some teeth had cracks running down them.  Mercury amalgam fillings are being commonly replaced with tooth coloured alternatives.  Mercury fillings acutally expand and contract over time.  When teeth are heavily filled it often leaves the tooth quite weak. When this happens the tooth often breaks due to the weaker cusps.

Direct white composite fillings are excellent for small to medium sized filings.  They bond to the tooth which helps to bring the strength of the tooth back.  They also look completely natural like the original tooth when placed by a skilled cosmetic dentist.  When cavities get to a very large size, onlays are often recommended.  You may be familiar with crowns, they encapsulate the whole tooth; onlays cover the biting surface of the tooth which helps to prevent fracture of the cusps; the margins are higher on the tooth which help you to keep it plaque free; and they are also bonded to the tooth to give it strength.  Onlays can be made of gold, resin or ceramic.

Time Dental prodives this service to patients in Godalming as well as the surrounding areas in Surrey, Hampshire, Werst sussesx and Berkshire.

Confidence with fresh breath at dentist near Godalming

July 3rd, 2012

Many people lack confidence due to halitosis (bad breath).  This can be caused by a number of factors; strong foods such as garlic and onions; smoking; a dry mouth; certain medical conditions; medicine that result in a dry mouth; bacteria that accumulates on the tongue and gum disease.

A patient came to Time Dental saying that she was suffering from bad breath.  She was a 20 /day cigarette smoker and said she had always been told that her teeth would fall out by middle age.  She was now at middle age and still had her teeth in place.  However on asessing her mouth and taking xrays she had quite advanced gum disease meaning that the supporting bone around her teeth had reduced resulting in periodontal pockets.  This had caused her teeth to become mobile and the end result would be that they would fall out.  The bad breath was caused not just due to the smoking but also the gum disease and the bacteria on her tongue.

To help her with this problem the first step was to start a quit smoking programme, and periodontal therapy sessions.  Gum disease is a reversible preventable disease in the early stages.  Commonly known as gingivitis.  This is the inflammation of the gums.  Effective brushing and interdental cleaning will prevent this from progressing.  In the later stages of gum disease bacteria invades the space between the gum and the tooth.  It then destroys the supporting bone around the tooth resulting in periodontal pockets.  The bone loss can be so destructive that the teeth eventually become mobile and loose.  Patients with periodontal pockets can suffer from bad breath, bleeding gums, abscesses and it can even affect your general health if not kept in a good condition.  There is also a link between gum disease and heart disease.

Regular dental health assessments with your dentist and hygienist can help to give you preventative advice and catch things early before its too late.

Time Dental provides the periodontal therapy treatment for pateints in Godalming as well as the surrounding towns in Surrey, Hampshire, West sussex and Berkshire.

Cosmetic dentistry and teeth straightening at dentist near Godalming

June 18th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking for a gentle dentist to look after her dental care.  She was also in pain from a tooth that had been broken for 6 months.  She had not been to a dentist in 6-8 years as she had a bad experience in the past and was now completely put off seeing one.

After discussing her inital concerns she told us that she was now experiencing throbbing tooth ache from her broken tooth.  She was also keen to explore the options on straightening her upper teeth.  She had orthodontic treatment as a child but her teeth had now relapsed.

We discussed her options for adult braces to straighten her teeth.  She had quite significant crowding or overlapping of her upper incisors which she was very conscious about.  She was a good candidate for either the Inman aligner or invisalign adult orthodontic system.

The inman aligner is a removable adult brace that is relatively transparent.  It uses springs which gently squeeze the teeth into a straighter position in a matter of weeks.  A great option for adults who are looking for a quick way to straighten their teeth and ahve a confident smile.

Invisalign clear aligner is a virtually invisible adult brace system that uses clear aligners that are worn for 2 weeks at a time.  They gradually move the teeth as each aligner is changed.  Treatment time can take between 8-24 months depending on the movements that need to be done.

Her broken tooth had started to give her pain, so after assessing the tooth the nerve had been infected so root canal therapy was carried out.  Many people dread hearing the words root canal therapy.  This is understandable, however at Time Dental we provide pain-free dentistry and that means you will not be able to feel anything during our treatment time.  Root canal therapy essentially means cleaning the infected root system of the tooth and then filling it so that re-infection cannout occur.

Time Dental provides cosmetic and orthodontic treatment for patients in the Godalmin, Guidford and surrounding areas in Surrey as well as Berkshire, West Sussex and Hampshire.
