Adult invisible braces for straight teeth at dentist near Fleet

September 26th, 2012

A recent independent study by the AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) discovered that virtually all the people interviewed (99.7%) believed that a smile is an important social asset and that 75% of adults feel an unattractive smile can hurt a persons chances for career success.

More adults are now looking to obtain a straight smile to help give them confidence. A patient came to Time Dental near Fleet to see what could be done to help close spaces in her upper teeth and straighten her crowded, overlapping lower teeth.  She had braces as a child and now in her mid forties her teeth had gaps between them and she was unhappy and self conscious when smiling.

She did not want train track braces again and wanted to explore invisible braces of adults.  Her options included white brackets and white coloured wires to make them more discreet; adult clear aligner braces which are virtually invisible such as Invisalign to help close the spaces; or the new wonder brace called the Inman aligner.

cosmetic dentures at Surrey dentist in Farnham

September 19th, 2012

Dentures are not what they used to be.  Now you can have cosmetic dentures that mimic the look of natural teeth so that you can have a confident smile.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham, Surrey looking for help to smile confidently.  He had neglected his dental health and only attended when he was in pain.  This had led to a patch up style dentistry and was not beneficial for his overall dental health.  He had a very bad experience as a child and now he was in his mid seventies and was still apprehensive about dental care.  He had finally decided to explore comprehensive dental care and was looking for a dentist that would provide cosmetic dentistry as well as helping him keep his  mouth healthy.

On assessing his mouth the majority of his remaining teeth had severe gum disease and decay.  This had resulted in hiss teeth becoming very loose and gums sore and bleeding.  When gum disease and dental decay has taken hold to this extent there would be no option but to remove the teeth.  Fortunately this did not mean that he would be left with a gummy smile.  Immediate cosmetic dentures can provisionally provide a confident smile and allow him to chew without being in discomfort.  Once healing of the gums had taken place, the options could be to provide a fixed bridge with dental implants, a cosmetic denture retained by dental implants or a new set of stable dentures.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Surrey as well as surrounding areas of Hampshire, West sussex, and Berkshire.

Straight teeth isn’t just for cosmetic purposes.  It does help to give you confidence if you have crooked teeth and an uneven smile, but it aslo helps to keep your gums healthy.

We discussed various options which were fixed orthodontic braces now with tooth coloured brackets to make them more discreet.  Clear aligners which are changed every two weeks and are virtually invisible adult braces.  We also discussed the Inman aligner which is the new wonder brace which is relatively invisible and can move teeth in a matter of weeks.

After showing him photos of his mouth it was clear that due to the crooked teeth he was finding it very hard to keep his mouth plaque and tartar free.  This had resulted in early stages of gum disease.  By straightening his teeth he would not only have a better smile but also be able to keep his gums in much better condition.

Top tips on removing Invisalign aligners from dentist in Farnham

September 6th, 2012

Invisalign is a great product, but to remove the first few sets of aligners can be very difficult, especially when you have lots of attachments.  Try these tips to help.

1. Always start at the back molars and work your way forward.

2. Don’t open your mouth wide to reach the back molars.  Just open slightly to get your finger to the back edge, you’ll find you have much more room for getting back there.

3.  Change each set of new aligners at night.  This helps in two ways. Firstly the most uncomfortable time is when first changing to a new aligner, by doing this at night you can sleep through the discomfort. Secondly it allows your teeth to move in the brace while you are asleep thereby making it easier to remove first thing in the morning.  If you have changed them in the daytime, simply waiting 1-2 hours before removing them makes a huge difference.

4.  Aligners are easier to remove when your mouth is warm.  Drinking cold water before trying to remove the aligners makes it harder.  But make sure you do not drink hot drinks and then try to remove the aligners as you will distort the aligner.

5.  Try using a paper towel around the fingers.  The paper towel allows more grip on the aligners and also dries the aligners slightly to help with gripping.

6.  Try surgical gloves.  Again this allows much more grip.  Using domestic household gloves will be too thick .

7.  ”Aligner Outies”.  These are special hooks that allow ease of aligner removal.  You start at the back of the mouth and again work your way to the front. Your Invisalign provider may give you one.  If they don’t they are readily available online.

8. Don’t panic.  This is easy to say, harder to do. You will be able to get them out.  The more stressed you get the harder it becomes.  Just take a 10 minute break and try again.

Healthy mouth replacing failing mercury fillings at dentist near Winchester

September 4th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental based in Farnham, Surrey looking to ensure that his mouth stayed healthy.  He had a number of mercury amalgam fillings placed as a child and was keen on replacing them as they now looked like black holes in his mouth.  He wanted to maintain a healthy mouth and to be able to smile confidently.

On assessing his mouth his gums were bleeding due to a build up of plaque bacteria, and he had a number of failing mercury fillings.  Mercury amalgam fillings actually expand and contract over time.  When they get to a certain size their may not be a sufficient amount of tooth to support the cusps.  This may result in the tooth breaking.

Fortunately there is a solution- the onlay.  Normally as a replacement for large mercury amalgam fillings, the onlay covers and protects the biting surface of teeth.  Onlays are made of tooth coloured ceramic but can be made of resin or gold.  The other advantages of onlays are that the margins are high on the tooth that allows you to keep them plaque free and they are bonded in place that adds strength to the tooth.

The patient had a number of other small to medium sized mercury fillings that were failing.  These could mercury fillings could be removed and made disease free and replaced with white composite resin fillings.  Again due to the fact that they bond to the teeth it helps give strength.

Confident smile with straight teeth for a wedding at a dentist near Fleet

August 30th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental near Fleet to see how we could help improve her smile.  She had overlapping upper front teeth which had bothered her for many years.  She had researched adult braces and was interested in the invisible braces that we offered at Time Dental.

There are currently two types of adult invisible braces that are offered at Time Dental.  One is a type that uses a series of clear aligners that help straighten teeth.  The adult clear aligner braces are very discreet and they are changed every two weeks which incrementally push the teeth into the correct position.  Treatment time for this type of adult brace can take between 8-24 months depending on the type of movements required to achieve straight teeth.  Once the teeth are straight using the orthodontic clear aligners they are helped to stay in place using special retainers.  Many adults are seeking straight teeth after having orthodontic braces as teenagers because retainers have not been worn.  After a course of adult orthodontic braces be they invisible braces of fixed braces; wearing retainers is a must.

How veneers can improve a smile for patients in Farnborough

August 29th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental looking for a way to improve his smile.  He had a lot of dentistry over the years but this was more remedial care rather than comprehensive dental care.  He had lost his upper front tooth 20 years ago and had a bridge in place which had now chipped due to something he had eaten.  He not only wanted to know his options about the chipped bridge but he also wanted to feel more confident when smiling.  He had changed jobs 2 years ago and was in a more customer facing position.  He was aware that when he smiled he would cover his mouth.

We discussed his options which really depended on what his final goal was. The options for his chipped bridge were either to replace the bridge for a more aesthetic ceramic bridge, or remove the bridge and place a dental implant.  A dental implant is a great way of replacing missing teeth.  The implant replaces the root of the tooth which then holds a post to which a crown is secured in place.  The advantage of a dental implant is that it helps preserve the boney support around that area and there is no need to prepare the teeth on either side of the gap.

To help him with confidence, we also discussed his options of improving the shape and colour of his adjacent teeth with dental porcelain veneers.  Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of ceramic that are bespoke handcrafted to each individual tooth which are bonded to the tooth to improve shape, colour and form.

Time Dental provides this service to patients in Farnborough as well as other areas in Hampshire, Surrey, West sussex and Berkshire.

Straight teeth for adult patients near Camberley with invisible braces

August 23rd, 2012

Orthodontic braces are no longer just for teenagers especially if braces can be virtually invisible.  At Time Dental we are seeing more and more adults looking for ways to straighten their crowded teeth fast and discreetly.

A patient came to see us concerned about her upper front teeth.  She no longer shows her teeth when smiling as she is now very embarrassed about them.  They had always bothered her but she knew she did not want to have fixed train track braces and didn’t know what her other options were.

Time Dental provide two very different types of adult orthodontic braces.  One type is a clear aligner system and the other is a removable spring loaded appliance.

The clear aligner system, called Invisalign, uses a series of clear aligners that are changed every 2 weeks.  As each aligner is changed they gradually move your teeth into the correct position.  The adult brace clear aligners are virtually invisible and can take 8-24 months of treatment depending on how much movement is required for the teeth.

The other sysytem is the Inman aligner adult brace.  This adult brace is reasonably discreet and uses a spring loaded system that very gently squeezes the teeth into a straighter position.  Treatment time is typically 8-16 weeks.  Super fast!

Time Dental provides this service for patients in Camberley as well as other areas in Hampshire, West sussex, Berkshire and Surrey.
