Welcome to the last of our series on National Smile Month and the 3 key messages it promotes. Today we are looking at the 3rd message:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks
  • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Why visit your dentist regularly?

Your dental health has a huge impact on your general health. Your mouth is the gate way to the rest of your body. At Time Dental we don’t just assess your teeth; we look at your lifestyle habits such as nail biting; dietary habits such as eating crunchy foods, acidic foods; drinking carbonated drinks; we also assess your jaw joint; your chewing muscles; screen for oral cancer on your soft tissues such as the lips, cheeks and tongue; as well as assessing the health of your gums and teeth.

Even if you take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home, you still need to see your dentist regularly. Your dentist can check for problems that you may not see or feel. Many dental problems don’t become visible or cause pain until they are in more advanced stages. Examples include cavities, gum disease and oral cancer.

Regular visits allow your dentist to ensure health and spot early signs of any disease. Problems can be treated at a manageable stage.

On average, seeing a dentist twice a year works well for most people. A few people can get away with fewer visits. Others may need more frequent visits. People with very little risk of cavities or gum disease can do fine seeing their dentist just once a year. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months, or more. This high-risk group includes:

  • Smokers
  • Diabetics
  • People with current gum disease
  • People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection
  • People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque

The frequency of dental visits may change in your lifetime. In times of stress or illness you may need to see the dentist more often. Your dentist will be able to assess and tailor your dental visits in line with your requirements to achieve dental health.
