New “teeth” grown from mouse cells

growing teeth from mouse cells

Dentists might be able to replace missing teeth with ones grown from gum cells in the future.

A team from London took cells from adult human gum tissue and combined them with another type of cell from mice to grow a tooth.

This technology is one step closer to providing them for patients but it’s likely to be many years before dentists can use this method.  One problem also being the cost for providing this sort of treatment in clinic

By transplanting the cell combination into mice the team were able to grow hybrid human/mouse teeth that had viable roots.

The research team hope that one day the technology could replace current dental implants but to make it work it would need to be about the same price as a dental implant.

Fizzy drinks linked with depression

January 10th, 2013

fizzy drink

A research study carried out in the US has found that people who drank more than four cans of fizzy drink a day were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to those who did not drink fizzy drinks.

The researchers studied the drink consumption of 263,925 men and women aged 50 -71.  After 10 years from the initial evaluation, participants were asked whether they had been diagnosed with depression since 2000.

For more information see: http://www.dentistry.co.uk/news/diet-fizzy-drinks-linked-depression

Fizzy drinks can cause rapid tooth decay if drunk on a daily basis due to the high amount of sugar in them.  Not only that but the fizz, which is carbonic acid,  can cause erosion of the tooth surface which can cause a huge amount of tooth damage. The fizzy drinks can erode through the hard enamel surface of the tooth leaving you at risk of further tooth decay and sensitivity.  One top tip if you drink fizzy drinks is to drink it through a straw.  This means that the drink will by-pass the teeth and reduce tooth damage.

Dad’s can influence the impact of fear of the dentist to their kids

November 22nd, 2012

A study from the University of Madrid  supports previous findings that fear levels among fathers, mothers and children are interlinked.

The new study highlights the important role that parents, especially fathers, play in the transmission of dental fear in the family.  Researchers analysed 183 children aged 7 to 12.  The study suggests that transmission of fear from mother to child can be  influenced be the reaction that the father displays when going to the dentist.

The implications of these results suggest a need for educating the parents especially the dads in prevention of dental fear and also that dads need to “man up” when going to see the dentist and not show signs of anxiety. Better still find an empathetic dentist who understands their dental anxiety and can help to reduce it which in turn would help the children by seeing a more relaxed dad at the dentists.

Time Dental at the AACD

October 4th, 2010

Team Effort!

On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th September, the Time Dental team all attended the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) International Meeting. The course, held in central London, was fully packed with lectures and hand-on workshops which focused on different aspects of modern cosmetic dentistry. As a member of the BACD (the British division of the AACD) Dr Rashid has attended many of these meetings, however for Amanda and Michaela this was their first dental conference! There were a lot of different stalls offering the newest hi-tech dental gadgets, but the main focus was on the lectures and workshops the Team had signed up for.  These included a lecture from Dr Bob Khanna on Botox and Fillers, and a workshop on ways to improve our client’s experience.  The team thoroughly enjoyed seminars on the latest developments on treating patients with clenching and grinding problems. How to restore them with crowns and veneers without them breaking due to the grinding habit.  The seminars helped to reinforce that the composite white fillings and the onlays that we are providing are the most advanced techiniques to date.  Which is great to know for all our patients!

D is for Deficiency…

September 17th, 2010

Thanks to the DentalBlog.com

Check out this very interesting article; originally aimed at the dentist, there is no reason why you can’t look out for your own supplement Deficiencies.

The reason why so many Europeans also suffer from a lack of Vitamin D…?  It’s most major source – the Sun – so often hidden by clouds in the northern hemisphere and with our undercover lifestyles??  Think about it; you’re in a car or train on the way to work; sat in an office most of the day; to come home too late for any substantial sun-hours so you cook, eat and relax indoors(!); as a result, it is probably a good idea to top-up by using some surprisingly inexpensive supplements.

Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood and helps to absorb these minerals from food in the intestines.  As well as the above advantages in the article, did you know that balancing your vitamin D levels can help with depression?  Food for thought…?

I have a Sweet Truth…

September 8th, 2010

So the kids are finally back to school, and after 6 weeks of fun in the sun I am sure it wasn’t the easiest task getting them there on time for that first day!

Many of us enjoy the certain indulgences that come with summertime, and our kids are no exception!  Things like ice-lollies and those lovely chilled fizzy drinks on a hot summers day are commonplace, while deserts and pick n’ mix become a more regular treat.  But now daily routine is back for our young ones, should we be keeping a close eye on their sugary intake?

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently released guidelines of the recommended daily sugar consumption for all ages.  I won’t shock you with the adult versions; I’m sure you know if you have a sweet-tooth (and you have probably been trying to ‘kick the habbit’ for the last decade or so!) but when it comes to the health of our children; information is key!

The guidelines suggest that children aged 4-8 years old with a daily caloric intake of 1,600 calories should consume no more than 130 calories, or about 3 teaspoons worth of sugar per day.  As you can imagine, this increases as your child grows into his pre-teen and teen years, and his caloric range increases to 1,800 to 2,000 a day.  At this point, the maximum amount of added sugar included in his daily diet should be between 5 to 8 teaspoons worth.

Are you ready for the scary truth?  A study conducted by the AHA found children as young as 1-3 years already bypass the daily recommendations, and typically consume around 10-12 teaspoons of sugar a day. Okay, sure, this is in America, but when results suggest that the UK isn’t too far behind and with figures from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey marking the average person to consume about 355 calories of added sugar a day, or the equivalent of 22.2 teaspoons – almost triple the recommended amount! – one has to be a little concerned.

So do keep an eye out and where possible avoid offering those sugary treats between meals… it’ll be a saving grace in the long run!

On the Economic Up…

August 28th, 2010

You may be interested to know that the world-wide cosmetic dental industry is growing and growing.  Along with the fast growth of the worlds population; and as the developed nations baby-boomers begin to age, cosmetic dentistry is become more and more of a required treatment than it used to be.

The in demand cosmetic dentists are treating all ages now, as kids require all varieties of tooth straightening and the older generations are booking further appointments due to a longer lived life expectancy.

Studies made by the Office of Health Economics confirm that both women and men find cosmetic dentistry gives them satisfaction, consciously compared with high-end purchases.  As technological advances decrease the costs involved; and while people become more conscious of their appearance; this ultimately increases demand.  Some have even talked of choice like veneers offering more satisfaction than a summer holiday might!  Opportunities such as the Inman Aligner now also make Cosmetic Dentistry that much easier to handle.

All in all, these improvements are only for the good of the general public.

Less time + less money + more satisfaction + a higher standard of treatment = Very happy customers indeed.
