Tips for relaxation from dental anxiety from dentist near Godalming

April 30th, 2013

Dental anxiety and how to cope by dentist near Godalming, Surrey at Time DentalMany people feel anxious or apprehensive when they visit the dentist.  The most common reason for this is a bad experience in the past.  Often a negative childhood experience that is carried on through to adulthood.  Other reasons can be fear of the unknown; not being sure of what is happening in the mouth; fear of needles; feeling claustrophobic.

If you suffer from any of these its important to discuss this with your dentist. Hopefully your gentle dentist will have empathy and understand your concerns.  Try these tips the next time you feel anxious about your trip to the dentist.

1. Breathe. I know this sounds simple but the number of people who forget to focus on breathing is huge.  This may help: try placing your hands on your tummy. As you SLOWLY breathe in through your nose you should be able to feel your hands rising, as you breathe out SLOWLY you should feel them dropping.  This technique makes you breathe with your diaphragm and aids in relaxation.

2. Let your body release tension. When you are stressed your shoulders can hunch up and your muscles in your body become tense. When lying in the dental chair starting form your toes scrunch them up and then relax them, then tense your calf muscles and relax them; work your way slowly up the body tensing and relaxing.  This help you to focus on letting your body muscles relax and also distracts your mind from what is happening at the mouth end.

3. Let your mind run wild!  Another tip is to think about your favorite past-time, activity or holiday; and focus on that. For example if you had a great beach holiday: how you felt on the beach with the sound of the waves and the feeling of the sand between your toes and the warm sunshine on your face.  The greater the detail the more this technique will work for you.

Dental phobic treated at dentist near Farnborough

December 10th, 2012

Dental phobia can be a real problem but can be helped with IV sedation.

Anxious dental patients who have phobias of visiting a dentist can be first triggered by bad experiences in the past.  When you’ve had a bad experience somewhere why would you want to go back?  That is a perfectly normal reaction.  However one bad experience does not mean your next one will be, but for some people one bad experience is enough to never return again.

This problem can now be helped with the use of sedation.  Sedation can be in the form of Oral, intravenous or inhalation  sedation.  All three forms are effective ways of controlling your anxiety levels.

Time Dental provides both oral and intravenous sedation to help nervous patients.

How to deal with dental phobia or nervous at dentist near Guildford, Surrey

November 7th, 2012

Lots of people are nervous about coming to the dentist.  This can stem from bad experiences as a child and the negative emotions are brought all the way through to adulthood.  There are ways to deal with dental phobia and one such option is sedation.

A patient came to Time Dental in Farnham which is very close to Guildford in Surrey.  He only attended when he was in pain and the last time he went to see a dentist was 10 years ago.  He was aware that he had multiple teeth that were badly broken and new they could not be saved.  He was terrified at the thought of having dental treatment.

We discussed his options which included relaxation and breathing exercises as well as the option of IV sedation. This is where a sedative is given which helps you to relax. It is important to note this is not like a general anesthetic where you are asleep.  IV sedation is conscious sedation meaning that you are awake and can communicate with the dentist which is important, however you have a very fuzzy, vague recollection of this and will not remember much of the treatment.  IV sedation is completely safe and is a great way of dealing with anxiety when visiting the dentist.

Calm your anxiety at dentist near Fleet

August 16th, 2012

A patient came to see us at Time Dental who was very anxious even for his first comprehensive dental health check.  He described himself as a having a dental phobia and had a bad experience in the past and since then he had been very nervous.

This is a very common reason for dental phobia and anxiety and its easy to see why people become nervous about coming to see the dentist.  In order to help the patient Dr Rashid first discussed with him what the bad experience was.  In this case the patient had felt all the treatment that was being carried out and found the experience very painful.

Dr Rashid listened to the patients concerns and came to an understanding of how and why the patient was feeling nervous.  He then explained that there are different levels of local anaesthetic that can be given and sometimes extra anaesthetic maybe required to ensure complete numbness.  He then talked the patient through very specific breathing exercises that are proven to help reduce anxiety and stress.  These breathing techniques can be applied to many different situations where people can feel stressed and tense.

Dental treatment can be worrying for nervous anxious patients, but with the right advise and care you can still get the best care with reduced stress.

Dental phobic and nervous about dentists in Fleet

May 17th, 2012

A patient came to Time Dental who was very nervous about having dental treatment.  She described herself as being dental phobic.  She had a bad experience as a child and since then she has never been able to have treatment done while being compeltely aware of what is going on around her.

This is not an uncommon story.  A huge percentage of the population do not go to for their 6 month dental health checks due to fear. Often it is due to an experience as a child.  Who could blame them?  You wouldn’t want to go somewhere where you’ve had a history of an unpleasant experience?

Now this is where Time Denal can help.  We can provide consicious IV sedation.  This is when a medication is given to you intravenously which helps you to relax.  You are compeltely awake during the treatment but you often cannot recollect the treatment.  An excellent option for people who have severe phobias of dentists.

What this means is that you can still have the treatment to keep your mouth helathy and in good shape without the worry.  This compeltely take the fear out of coming to the dentist.  This means at Time Dental we can get your mouth quickly into good health and then back on a regular healthy mouth programme.

Time Dental provides the IV sedation service for patients in the Fleet, Alton Farnham, Winchester, Guildford and Farnborough area, as well as the areas in Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex and Berrkshire.  Call us to see how we can help yo on 01252 723 008. Time Dental- Private dental care at it’s best
