The BDA (British Dental Association) has provided a campaign information release on 7 things you didn’t know about tooth whitening

1. WHITENING IS SAFE

If carried out by a trained dental professional, whitening is perfectly safe. Based on their knowledge of your oral health your dentist will discuss with you the options available, decide if tooth whitening is appropriate for you and develop an overall treatment plan that gives the desired result.

You’ll get to see on a chart what shade your teeth are before the treatment and what shade you’re likely to achieve. At the end of the treatment the dentist will show you the actual result so you can understand how effective it was. You will also see when you look in the mirror!

2. ONLY TRAINED DENTAL PROFESSIONALS CAN WHITEN TEETH

It is illegal for anyone other than dentists or their teams to carry out teeth whitening. Anyone else offering teeth whitening (e.g. beauticians, hairdressers, and salon staff) won’t have the right training and knowledge, could permanently damage your teeth and gums and can’t help you when something goes wrong.

3. THE PREFERRED OPTION

Whitening won’t remove the surface of your teeth or change their shape. It’s often a better option than alternatives, such as veneers, because it doesn’t involve permanently altering the tooth’s structure and is easy to look after.

4. SELECTING THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR YOU

Your dentist is trained to know what whitening products will be safe for your teeth and gums. Products provided by non-dentists often do not have enough safety data and evidence to support their use; this can result in burned gums and/or blistered lips or even more serious consequences. Using products that are not appropriate for you will produce poor results.

5. HOW IT WORKS

A carefully-controlled concentration of bleach is applied to your teeth using specially-made trays that fit in your mouth. Your dentist will be able to discuss with you the level of whitening you want and give you an idea of how many treatments you may need to achieve the shade you’re after.

Like hair and skin, teeth vary in colour. Some are yellower or darker than others, even when they are quite healthy. Teeth tend to get darker as people get older. Teeth sometimes become darker if their roots have been damaged or diseased and the ‘nerve’ has died.

6. WHAT TO EXPECT

You may experience some sensitivity for a short time during your treatment but this is normal and will soon fade away after completion.

7. OVER THE COUNTER KITS MAY NOT BE SAFE

The products you can buy online or from high street shops often fail to declare the precise chemicals used so it’s very difficult to assess their safety. Because of this they should not be considered safe. These products won’t produce the same good results you can expect by visiting your dentist.

Tooth colour can be lightened with Hydrogen Peroxide (bleach) and how strong the dose needs to be will be decided by your dentist.

Ask your dentist for more information.

Porcelain veneers at dentist near Farnborough

April 26th, 2013

Dentist near Farnborough, Hampshire describes what dental veneers are and how they can improve your confidence from Time DentalWhat are porcelain veneers?  Dental veneers are thin porcelain laminates that are bonded to the teeth.

They are custom fit and bespoke crafted by a master ceramist. The ceramists are more like artists of the dental world!  Once the ceramist has added effects to the veneers to make them life like they are sent back to the cosmetic dentist to bond onto the teeth.  Once they are bonded they are very strong and last many years when looked after properly.

Dental veneers can be used on single teeth or multiple teeth to make a dramatic improvement to your smile. They are often prescribed to change the shade of a tooth; improve the shape; alter the form; and improve your smile.

Top tips for 6 month smiles adult clear braces from dentist near Farnborough

March 28th, 2013

6 month smiles clear adult braces available at Time Dental near Farnborough, Hampshire

If you are wearing the new 6 month smiles adult clear braces or are about to embark on a course of treatment, here are some top tips to help you through the first few weeks:

1. Use dental wax- initially the braces can rub on the inside of your cheeks as your mouth gets used to them.  Warm a small piece of dental wax in your fingers and gently press on to the bracket which is making your mouth sore.  You can even reuse the wax so that you don’t end up having to constantly get through lots of it.

2. Keep tepe interdental brushes handy- using interdental brushes such as tepes in your pocket is really helpful.  Yellow sized tepe to get round the brackets and pink tepe to get in between your teeth.

3. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for any discomfort- your teeth will be tender initially as they start to move. Taking analgesics helps.

4. Stick to soft foods- Eating is always tricky at first especially if you have biteguards which prop your mouth open.  Stick to eating foods such as porridge, soup (avoiding the tomato based ones as they will stain  the elastic ties), pasta, boiled vegetables (tomatoes and beetroot will stain so avoid those).

5. Avoid foods that can cause staining and debond brackets- Food with high colourings, curries with turmeric, red wine, high in colour mouthwash, tomato based sauces, hard or crunchy foods such as crusty bread, museli, grenola, nuts, raw vegetables.

Adult braces are becoming very common now, so if you are thinking of having fixed clear braces or if you have fixed braces on right now have a look at these tips to help you through your treatment time.  We understand that the first couple of months of fixed braces can be the most challenging for you while you adjust to the braces.

1.  Keep the end goal in mind.  This is really important especially if you are having the 6 month smile clear braces.  Keep focused on the end result and your new smile, this will make the hassle of the braces a worth while investment.

2. In the first few weeks you may find that the brackets can rub on the inside of your lips.  Use a very small piece of dental wax, warm it up between your fingers and press gently onto the bracket that is rubbing.  You only need a small amount. Sometimes the brackets on the lower front teeth will rub so warm the wax between your fingers into a long sausage shape.

3. Re use the wax. So that you don’t get through lots of wax you can re use it when the rubbing stops.

4. Avoid hard crunchy food.  You will find it harder to eat and could also risk debonding a bracket. Stick to soft foods like pasta, mash potato, yogurts, soup, soft vegetables.

5. Avoid food or drinks with high colours in as they can stain the clear brackets eg, red sauces, tomato based pasta sauce, curries (due to the turmeric), red wine, mouthwashes with intense colouring.

6. Food will get stuck every time you eat so keep a few yellow and pink sized tepe interdental brushes in your pocket or handbag.  Yellow tepe to get around the brackets and pink to get in between the teeth.

7. Peroxyl mouth wash helps to sooth any sore spots on the cheeks and helps keep the brackets clean.

8. If a bracket debonds don’t panic, it can be easily refitted at your next review appointment.

9.  Your teeth will feel tender initially.  In the first few weeks the teeth may feel tender or sensitive- this is normal as the teeth are adjusting to the gentle pressure movements.  Take some analgesics like paracetamol or ibuprofen.

10. Remember it does get much easier after the first few weeks! Once you get past the first few weeks you will adjust to the braces very quickly.

Porcelain veneers and crowns can make a huge impact on your smile.  Take a look at this gentleman.  He came to us having broken his bridge.  His teeth were generally discoloured and had multiple mercury fillings in the biting surface of his upper teeth.  The old fillings were failing as they had cracks in them and were very fragile.  He said he was very conscious when he was smiling and often covered his mouth with his hand.  His job involved meeting and greeting new potential clients and he was very aware that his smile was not giving him the confidence that he needed.

We discussed his options and we proposed to replace his old bridge with a new ceramic bridge and reshape a number of his teeth with porcelain veneers and also add protection to his weaker teeth with crowns.

The results speak for themselves. A very happy confident person.

1.  Tooth whitening is safe.  After carrying out an dental health assessment, your dentist will be able to recommend whether tooth whitening is the best treatment plan for you to achieve the desired results.

2.  Only trained dental professionals can whiten teeth.  It is illegal for anyone other than the dentist and their team members to carry out tooth whitening.  Anyone else offering tooth whitening (eg.  hairdressers, salon staff, beauticians) will not have the dental knowledge if your teeth or gums become damaged and cannot help if something went wrong.

3.  The alternative option.  Whitening will not change the shape of the teeth or damage the tooth surface.  It is often the easiest option as it does not require preparation of the tooth surface like veneers.

4.  Selecting the right product for you.  Your dentist will be able to advise and provide the right tooth whitening product for you.  Products provided by non-dentists may burn the gums or cause blisters on the lips due chemicals in the products.

5. How it works.  A careful concentration of whitening gel is placed in special custom fit whitening trays which are then placed into the mouth.  Your dentist will be able to advise how many treatments will be required to achieve the desired result.

6.  What to expect.  You may experience sensitivity when tooth whitening, this is normal and is only temporary and will fade after 24 hours.
