Cut down on how often you have sugary food and drink

This is the second of 3 most important ways to keep your teeth and gums in great shape.

National Smile Months second key message is a tough one… but achievable

Why does consuming sugary food and drink matter?  Well, decay is caused by the three factors: plaque bacteria, sugar and time. When you have something sugary the bacteria feeds on it which makes acid that causes tooth decay. So if you have sugar lots of times in the day your teeth will be under constant acid attack.

So what can I do to help? Small changes to your lifestyle are best, such as: switching to artificial sweeteners in your tea or coffee; better yet cut it out completely. Try vegetable sticks (such as carrots, cucumber, peppers) with houmus. Sliced apple with low fat cottage cheese. Eating a piece of cheese is a brilliant way of neutralising the acid after eating. Take a look on the internet to find plenty of ideas for healthy snacks.
Just making one or two changes will make a huge difference.
