Smiling in Farnham

July 21st, 2011

A client came to see us the other day having not been to see a dentist for over seven years!  He was unhappy with the colour of his teeth, the shape of the upper front teeth, and the overlapping of his lower front teeth.  This had been bothering him for sometime now and he was becoming more and more self conscious about it to the point where he was hiding his teeth when smiling.

On our initial discussion he told me he smoked about 20 cigarettes a day and love to drink red wine.  Although he thought he had no problems with his teeth he felt he wanted to improve the look of them.  On examination we found that he had multiple areas of decay and old mercury fillings that were also failing.  After showing him close ups of his teeth he completely understood that his mouth was in a seriously neglected condition and that if we did not act immediately he would end up losing many of his teeth.  After stabilising his mouth and making it disease free he then wanted to look at the aesthetics of his smile.

We scheduled his appointments and began to make his mouth healthy again.  Old amalgam fillings that were failing were replaced with tooth coloured white composite fillings.  This made an immediate impact on his confidence as his teeth now looked like teeth again rather than having ugly black fillings which actually weaken your teeth over time.  He also had mulitple areas of decay on his upper front teeth which we again filled with white fillings.  People are always suprised to hear they have active decay and cavities in the mouth as they expect their teeth to hurt but you don’t always get symptoms from where there is an underlying problem.  Once your teeth start to hurt that may mean that you have a more serious condition and more complex treatment may be required to sort out the problem.  That’s why its so important to visit your dentist regularly.  After I had shown him the cavites with digital photographs that helped him to realise how serious the conditon of his mouth was.

His mouth is now stable, although he still smokes 20 cigarettes a day.  Our next paln is to address his aesthetic concerns, which will involve freshening up his smile with tooth whitening, building and recontouring his upper front teeth with composite bonding and straightening his lower teeth.   Then he’ll have something to really smile about!

White composite Fillings in Fleet

July 13th, 2011

A client came  to Time Dental having not been to a dentist in seven years!  It wasn’t because he had a fear of dentists, it was simply because he had no pain so he thought everything was ok and he wanted to improve his smile because it had discoloured.  He smoked about 20 cigarettes a day and brushed his teeth only once a day which would have contributed to the discolouration.

On assessing his mouth and taking close-up photos to show him what was acutally going on in his mouth, we discovered that he had multiple areas of tooth decay, gum disease as well as the discolouration.  Many people feel that if they have no pain then their mouth is okay and they don’t need to see a dentist.  Your body does not work that way.  You may still have underlying problems even if you have no symptoms. That’s why it’s so important to visit your dentist regularly so that the can give the best advice.

After showing him his photos he was very keen on getting his mouth healthy as soon as possible.  This would involve removing the active decay and placing white composite fillings.  This would make his mouth healthy so that he would have no future pain from them as well as look great.  Much of his discolouration was due to decay happening at the gum line of his upper front teeth.

Visiting the hygienist would also dramatically improve his gum health, although smoking is still going to have a negative impact on his dental health.  There is a link between smoking and gum disease as well as oral cancer, so smoking 20 a day is certainly not going to help.  Quiting smoking will not only improve his dental health and freshen his breath but it will also improve his general health.

He is certainly motivated now and thats a really postive result after not having been in such a long time.

Veneers in Farnham

July 7th, 2011

A client came to see us a while ago wanting to improve her smile.  She felt she did not show much of her teeth when smiling and the teeth themselves were discouloured, short and square in shape.  This made her feel very self conscious  and she often held her hand over her mouth when smiling.

On assessing her smile we noted that she had a very deep bite and her teeth were tipping back which gave the illusion of short teeth.  However her teeth were also square and small in shape which made them look even shorter.  The teeth were quite stained and discoloured.

We discussed her options and these ranged from orthodontic work (ie braces) with tooth whitening after straightening her teeth, veneers on the majority of her top teeth, or a combination of braces and fewer veneers.

Orthodontics (braces) are a great way of improving the look and function of your teeth no matter how old you are.  It’s not just for teenagers!  There are so many types available, from your traditional train tracks to virtually invisible braces.

Porcelain veneers can help improve the size, shape colour and form of your teeth.  They’re thin porcelain laminates that are permanently bonded to your teeth to give an instant improvement.

This lady decided to use the combined approach.  She ended having braces for 18 months to get her teeth into the right position, which meant that after completing her braces treatment we only had to place four veneers at the front to improve the size and shape of her upper front teeth.  We also carried out tooth whitening to improve the shade of her remaining teeth.

This meant that she was able to smile with complete confidence and not have to be embarressed anymore.
