brush baby brush

June 29th, 2011

Brushing your kids teeth is really important.  The best thing to do is to start brushing your babys’ teeth as soon as they start to come through.  As they get older let them watch you brush your own teeth and get them to do have a go a doing theirs while you brush yours.  Try to make it fun!  Kids will mimic their parents behaviours, so if they see you do it they are more likely to do it themsleves.  Unfortunately my daughter refused to mimic this particular habit even though she saw me do it every day!

I have a two year old daughter and let me tell you brushing time is a real challenge!  Some kids love doing it, others don’t.  My daughter fell into the later category.  We tried a number of different techiniques.  Sometimes she liked having an elecrtic toothbrush in her mouth othertimes she would only let me use a manual toothbrush, and sometimes she just plain refused.  However no matter how hard it was I still persisted.  It’s still a struggle sometimes especially when it’s her bedtime and she is feeling cranky.  Now I make up songs as I brush her teeth to make it fun for her.  Try adapting a nursery rhyme to do with brushing teeth.

Make sure you use a small headed toothbrush and only use kids toothpaste as appropriate for the age.  I make sure the paste has fluoride in and only use a smear of it on the brush as toddlers tend to swallow the toothpaste.  Never let babies go to bed with a bottle of milk as this can cause what’s called bottle caries.  Try the techniques above, but always persevere as preventative techinques to dental decay are always best.

Tooth whitening at a Farnham Dentist

June 22nd, 2011

A client came to see us having had root canal therapy on three front teeth in the past and one of them had started to severely discolour.  As youcan imagine this was causing her quite some distress as her job entailed meeting potential new clients everyday and so she had become very conscious of the darker tooth.

It is quite common for a tooth to darken after root canal therapy as the tooth is dead.  There are a number of options that can help to address the problem.  One option could be to crown the tooth with a porcelain crown.  This will encompass the tooth entirely giving it strength as well as look very natural.  Another option could be to place a porcelain veneer on the tooth, which is a much more minimal preparation on the tooth.  Another option could be to whiten the tooth from inside and outside the tooth.  This is the least invasive option and you can achieve some stunning results.

After discussing the above options she decided to choose the internal and external tooth whitening procedure.  This involved taking impressions of her teeth to make custom fit whitening trays and then showing her how to carefully place the gel in the tooth as well as on the outside of it.  She was very happy with the results.

Confidence boost in Farnham

June 15th, 2011

Having discoloured teeth can seriously affect your confidence.  A client came to see us at Time Dental beacuse he was very conscious of his stained teeth and old veneers.  He was in the business of meeting people and understood the importance of feeling confident and how important it is to smile.  He had got to the point where he was not showing his teeth and avoided being photographed.

On assessing his concerns he had two old veneers where the margins of the veneers where showing by the gum line, and his teeth had a general stain to them.  He drank alot of black tea and coffee to help him get through the day, so it was not surprising to see this much staining.  If you drink normal tea, herbal teas, coffee, red wine, fizzy drinks with lots of colour in them you are constantly discolouring your teeth.

We discussed his options and the simplest plan to address his concerns and get him smiling again was to whiten his teeth with a professional tooth whitening system and then replace to his two veneers to match his whiter teeth.

Tooth whitening is the easiest way to make a difference to your smile.  Its safe, easy to do and you can achieve great results if carried out properly.  One thing to bare in mind is that if you whiten your teeth fillings, vebeers and crowns will not be affected by the whitening gel.  This was why we whitened the teeth first, and once we had achieved a good result, the veneers are then colour matched to the whiter teeth.

So how did he feel afterwards?  Well he couldn’t stop smiling!

Steps to help stop tooth decay in Aldershot

June 8th, 2011

A client came to see us at Time Dental with throbbing tooth ache.  She had not been to see a dentist in a long time as she felt she had no problems with her teeth as they had not caused her any pain.

On inspecting the tooth, she had a huge hole in the side of it which had reached the nerve which is in the middle of the tooth.  When decay gets this deep the options for this tooth is either root canal therapy or extraction.

Many people think that as they are not getting any pain from their teeth they must be ok so why bother seeing a dentist?  Unfortunately your body does not work that way.  You do not always get symptoms or pain from a tooth which has an underlying problem like decay.  Once you start getting pain from a tooth this often means that the problem is much deeper and can be more complicated to address.

So how do you know if you have decay in your mouth and how do you prevent it?  The best way to see if decay or other gum or mouth problems are present is to visit your dentist regularly.  At Time Dental we take photos of your mouth to help you understand what is happening and why.  We believe in a preventative dentistry approach which means identifying what factors in your lifestyle are making you more at risk of dental disease and giving the appropriate advice.  We can also spot things early and ensure your mouth stays healthy.

What happened to the lady with toothache?  Well she opted to save the tooth which meant root canal therapy.  This is not as horrific as it may seem.  Root canal therapy involves cleaning the inside of your tooth to the tip of the roots and then filling the void once the tooth has been disinfected.  A white composite filling was placed in the tooth to restore it to function.  If the original cavity is very large often a crown is recommended to protect the tooth from breaking.
