Time Dental supports the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

November 30th, 2010

Time Dental on West Street is providing a unique way of supporting the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.  Time Dental will donate £30 to the hospice for every tooth whitening treatment carried out.  “The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice is such an important part of Farnham that we wanted to help support the great work they do,” says Dr Rashid of Time Dental, “when you use our professional tooth whitening kits, it feels good to know that your also helping to support a brilliant charity.  Tooth whitening is a very easy way of making a big difference to your smile.  The gel removes the stains built up by tea, coffee, red wine, coloured foods and even certain types of medicine.  Over-the-counter kits can be highly acidic and damaging to the teeth and gums, so always use a professional system.  There are two ways of tooth whitening, in-office or the professional kit.  The in-office tooth whitening system uses a high concentrated gel that boosts the shade of your teeth up to eight shades lighter in under one hour.  Some in-office systems use laser whitening, this is just a high energy light source that activates the whitening gel, you dont need to use a light source in other types of systems.  The professional kit involves providing custom fit trays that are loaded with the gel and placed in the mouth which are normally kept in over night.  Combining the two systems can give you the best results.”

Looking for a cosmetic dentist?

November 23rd, 2010

When choosing a cosmetic dentist what should you be looking for?

Cosmetic dentistry is defined as “any type of dental procedure which enhances the patient’s teeth and their smile — thus improving a person’s overall appearance and self-confidence.” Do you have teeth that are uneven, crooked, discoloured, missing, short, long or crowded, and you are not sure how to go about finding a dentist who can help you? You have come to the right place!

Many cosmetic dentists attend conferences and courses through groups like the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD). Attending such courses demonstrates that the dentist is keeping up to date with the latest technologies and treatments. Dr Rashid at Time Dental is a fully qualified member of the BACD and has a fountain of knowledge regarding cosmetic dentistry.

Membership in dental societies shows a commitment to quality cosmetic dentistry. In the UK, look out for memberships to organisations such as the British Dental Association (BDA) and the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF). Those that belong to the BACD demonstrate clinical excellence through continuing professional development.

As well as creating your beautiful smile, a good cosmetic dentist should be concerned about your overall general dental health, and ask you questions to gain information on you overall medical history.

When considering cosmetic dentistry, you want to choose a dentist who you feel comfortable with, one who understands what you are looking to achieve.

A cosmetic dentist provides you with clear well explained solutions and realistic expectations. You have a right to know and fully understand what is going to happen in your own mouth.

During your consultation, ask lots of questions. A good cosmetic dentist should be able to show you pictures of their past work, with before and after shots. Powerpoint presentations, photo albums and testimonials should also be at your disposal and your dentist should be able to produce them willingly at your request.

A cosmetic dentist takes the time to listen to your concerns and goals for your teeth and smile.  You should never feel rushed into making any decisions.

The practice environment as well as the team who will be looking after you, are also important things to consider when choosing your cosmetic dentist.

Find a team who are friendly, polite, and knowledgeable and who genuinely care about you and your smile.  Ask a team member to give you a tour of the practice. Do they have a separate sterilisation room? Does the practice look clean and tidy?  Amanda is the practice manager and guest host at Time Dental, and will be more than happy to answer any of your queries or show you around the practice.

Veneers at Time Dental

November 16th, 2010

Unfortunately, nature has not gifted all of us with white, straight teeth, but thanks to porcelain veneers crooked discoloured smiles can be a thing of the past!

So what are they? Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of tooth-coloured material (ceramic, porcelain, composite bonding material) that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They’re made in a laboratory by a dental technician who works from a mould provided by your dentist.

Why would you need a veneer? If tooth whitening cannot remove the stains from your teeth, grinding has left your teeth extensively worn or years of nail biting has left your teeth badly chipped, veneers could be the solution for you. They are also great for filling gaps between your teeth.

How long will it last? If looked after properly, your veneers will last you a number of years. Veneers are not a miracle cure to having stained or chipped teeth; like normal teeth veneers are susceptible to damage, therefore avoiding crunchy food and biting your nails still applies. However veneers are like a second chance at having beautiful teeth, so I’m sure will agree avoiding these things is a worthy sacrifice!

Here at Time Dental we offer a prestigious service and use the top dental laboratory in the country to ensure your veneers are works of art!  Call 01252 723008 and book in for a consultation to see how you can get a smile to be proud of!

Spaces to fill?

November 8th, 2010

Gaps especially at the front of the mouth can look very unsightly, especially if food is also getting trapped in between them. Going for a meal in a restaurant could be an embarrassing experience!  Food traps can also result in stagnation of bacteria in the mouth and cause tooth decay.  The case above shows a space between the two front teeth.  A really quick way of making them look better as well stopping food trapping is to provide porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of ceramic that are bonded onto the front surface of your tooth.  The veneers once bonded on are very strong and will last many years as long as they are cared for in the correct way.  Veneers can be used to lighten your teeth and change the shape of them to make them look better.

“One of our clients was unhappy with the colour of his teeth and of the gap in between them. So we carried out tooth whitening and placed four ceramic veneers to close the spaces”, says Dr Rashid of Time Dental, “we have master ceramists to handcraft bespoke individual veneers that are tailor-made for each individual tooth.  The detail that goes into creating these veneers is amazing!  This is why they look so life-like”.

Mouth cancer action month

November 2nd, 2010

Did you know that over 5,300 new cases of mouth cancer a year are diagnosed in the UK?  The number of annual mouth cancer cases increased by a staggering 41% in the last decade.  Early detection transforms survival chances to more than 90%.

Know the risks – so prevention is the key.

So what are the risk factors? Well, tobacco use and drinking alcohol are the main risk factors and account for around three in four mouth cancers.  People who both drink and use tobacco to excess are up to 30 times more likely to develop the condition.  A poor diet can also be a risk factor; increasing evidence also suggests that Omega 3, found in foods such as eggs and fish can help lower risks, as can foods in high fibre such as whole-wheat pasta and brown rice.  Chewing tobacco- Although some people believe this is safer than smoking, the reality is it is much more dangerous.  The human papilloma virus HPV has recently been identified as a risk factor particularly in younger people.

“ The warning signs for mouth cancer are ulcers which do not heal in 3 weeks, red and hite patches in the mouth and unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth,” says Dr Rashid at Time Dental,” the best thing you can do is see your dentist on a regular basis as we are in the best position to identify things early. At Time Dental we make it routine to carry out an oral cancer screening at every examination”
